**NB: Advice and Warning for Future Stanford Applicants

**NB: Advice and warning to future Stanford applicants. For those who think that Stanford is only looking for the TOP computer/engineering/STEM/technology/entrepreneurs...they are wrong! Stanford is looking for the TOP students in the humanities/music/art/theater/social change leaders/future political activists...

...Stanford is looking for future leaders in ALL fields...including sports. Stanford is in a very rare position that truly offers TOP programs in humanities/liberal arts similar to Harvard/Yale...TOP programs in engineering/CS/STEM similar to MIT/Caltech/Carnegie Mellon...and TOP programs in athletics (Stanford has won the NCAA Director's Cup 19 years in a row) to compete against schools like USC, Florida, or Michigan...

...I have seen way too many outstanding STEM/CS/engineering students being rejected in the past several years because Stanford has room ONLY for some of the best from this group...they have to make room for some of the best humanities/liberal arts students along with the best elite athletes...

...remember, they are building a class made up of individuals that offer different voices, strengths, passions, and scholarly pursuits. So DO what you love and are passionate about...because your LIGHT will shine through to the admissions committee regardless of what you pursue.

Thanks a lot!! :-)

@newbee18. You’re welcome. And one more thing…there is nothing wrong with students who love both CS/STEM and the humanities/liberal arts…they are not mutually exclusive (Leonardo da Vinci anyone)…as reflected in recent Stanford student surveys and new combined majors being offered…

<a href=“Stanford's new major integrates humanities, computer science”>http://www.sfgate.com/technology/article/Stanford-s-new-major-integrates-humanities-5300471.php</a></p>

…these are only the beginning…they are planning to roll out many more combinations very soon.

Any joint program with Econ and Eng or Computer? Have to make a decision by May 1.

@net222, at Stanford you can major in whatever you want. And if you want to combine economics with engineering or CS, you can create a major, you can double major, you may even be able to minor in Econ (not sure). Stanford isn’t a school where you have to be accepted to your major, and there are lots of interdisciplinary options and you can work with an advisor to create one if you find a cohesive way to do it. What else are you deciding on?

My son is interested in Econ major, but also interested in some Engineering/Computer “minor”. He is fortunately accepted by Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Chicago. We are looking for as much info as possible that best fit his interest. We see Princeton are strong on both Econ/CS and has cert program. Chicago/Yale are strong on Econ, but not CS/CE. Stanford is famous for CS, but, not sure about joint Econ/CS .

Stanford has an exceptionally strong Econ department - right up there with Harvard, Princeton, and UChicago. Your son could possibly double major in both, or major and minor. Stanford is just instituting joint humanities/cs majors and econ/cs could be a possible joint major. If I were picking a school based on those two interests, Stanford would be the best bet followed by Princeton.

It still ceases to amaze me that some uninformed students who are applying, rejected, or even “accepted” have no idea that the humanities/arts/social sciences are just as HIGHLY regarded in the academic world as their CS/Engineering/STEM programs…and it is this strength that allows so many students to switch back and forth in their four years on the FARM between being a pure “fuzzy” or “techie” or as many students at Stanford are “fuzzy/techie”…the great popularity of the “interdisciplinary majors”…

Stanford is not lacking in humanities majors, I assure you. Getting accepted there with ANY major is a tough go.

Agreed @cptofthehouse. That is the point I was trying to make.

It is time to bump this to the top since I am seeing way too many chance threads and questions already on CC and here…

…and a reminder…there are other highly successful and prized students outside of new company founders…
