My son is in Asheville and is using his 1/4 tank of gas to go get groceries this morning.
I live in Winston-Salem, NC and I was able to get gas this morning. My husband travels throughout the state and he has not had any problems thus far. As long as people do not go crazy and start hoarding gas all should be ok within the next week.
Iām old enough (darn) to remember gas rationing in the late 70ās. We could only fill up on designated days. But Iām also old enough to forget how that was enforced. License plates?
Thatās how California did it. Last digit - donāt recall how plates with no digits were classified.
Although I no longer live there, I grew up in western NC and still have family there. The problem in NC is mostly confined to the west - Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, etc. Currently, gas station in the Hendersonville area are restricting gas purchases and are reporting mile-long lines of cars.
I lived in NH. It was done by birthday. Even days could fill on even days, and odd birthdays could fill on odd days.
My other son just reported in from Chattanoogaā¦only premium gas was available when he filled up.
One of the times when it is advantageous to be able to refuel your electric vehicle in your garageā¦
American says it will have to make refueling stops for some of its flights.
Until they hit a power grid
Anyone in NC have details on this declaration? What can NC do to open a shut down pipeline from Gulf Coast refineries? How does it āensure adequate fuel supply suppliesā if fuel isnāt flowing?
EDIT: I read the actual text. Basically it waives limitations on truck sizes/driving hours/fees for moving fuel by truck into the state. As the pipeline carries the equivalent of 15,000+ trucks per day, Iām not sure this will make a dent. But I suppose itās something.
I was amused that the Gov felt it necessary to include:
This Executive Order does not prohibit or restrict lawfully possessed firearms or ammunition or impose any limitation on the consumption, transportation, sale, or purchase of alcoholic beverages
I was 11 during the gas crisis in 1973. I remember Dad sitting us down and explaining we might not be able to go to church. I was shocked because we went to church across Austin three times a week without fail. It never came to that but I still remember the incident clearly.
Governor of Virginia also declared a state of emergency. No gas at our local station tonight. Hopefully, this does not last long.
DH couldnāt find any gas this afternoon. But on our way home from the Tar Heels game, a station was open. Long line, but still had gas. Many stations b/w our neighborhood and campus were out. We filled up his car, then went home to get mine. Our main concern is getting S19 home from Ohio in a week!!
I believe they were considered āevenā.
We were friends with the gas station guy and if we needed gas on the wrong day, we just parked the car across the street and heād fill it up during the closed hours. If I recall, the station was only open for 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. He just pretended he was working on the car and filled it up.
Oh great - Iām scheduled to drive to the Outer Banks of NC on Saturday, and need to drive through VA. Fingers crossed it goes fine. I probably have close to enough gas to get there now, and will be careful between now and when I leave. But once there, I will worry about filling up to get back home.
I hear you. We had planned on driving to TN, SC, and NC during the next week. SC VRBO is non-cancellable. I donāt think weāre going to attempt it.
If we have to, weāll use a garden hose to siphon from one car to the other so we can go get S. People are panic buying and we saw plenty of people w/ massive gas cans filling up. Reading local news, thereās plenty of gas it just needs to get to the right places.
Edited to add: weāre also not going anywhere for now. DH has a haircut and doggo has a grooming appt, but thatās it until we go get S from school!
@toledo, donāt cancel yet.
Yes, there are gas stations w/o gas in NC, but thatās because people are panic-buying not because there is a shortage. The governorās declaration waives some regulations on transport by tanker truck. There is a big line up of tanker trucks getting filled up in Wilmington (port city).
I saw that Colonial Pipeline has gone to a manual process too so hopefully things will be back to normal soon if the general public stops panicking.
BTW, if any of yāall have thought about going electric, we looooove our Chevy Bolt EV. Just plug it in at night like your phone. Super low maintenance. Goes 200+ miles on one charge. Hate it when we have to drive our gas guzzling van instead to haul something or if we are going in two different directions. Iām sure the next car we buy will be another EV. This is the second we have owned.
I wonder if the media hadnāt reported anything, if it all would have been fine. I got gas yesterday morning. Still had regular at our usual stop, but not the cheap 88 grade I usually get. Then all of the local news places started talking about it and panic set in. H got gas after work and lines were long and several places were out. But one still was normal with no lines. Weird. But now heās driving the spare vehicle because we are supposed to go to Williamsburg Friday-Saturday. We will.need to fill up somewhere at some point on the trip. Hopefully it wonāt be too bad by then.
