NC State vs. Lehigh

I plan to go into engineering and have found that I am stucK DEciding between NC State and Lehigh. I have visited NC state and found I disliked the campus and its setup but loved Raleigh. From photos of Lehigh, the campus appears to be very beautiful but the campus town is not as great as Raleigh. In regards to their engineering programs, I think Lehigh's is better but it does not offer the opportunities NC State does in respect to jobs and internships. Finally, I would really prefer a medium school like Lehihh but NC State is definitely cheaper. It seems like Lehigh also has a better reputation as a better college as well.
I was hoping someone had some information or experience that would sway my opinion towards one school? Or maybe my perspective of the schools is wrong? Or any schools in eastern US that are better than both NC State and Lrhigh?

This is like comparing apples and oranges- large state university vs medium size school and a huge tuition difference. You don’t know the total sum until you apply but on first glance the difference is about $35K if you are in state.

There is no harm in applying to both if you can swing it financially, but the price tag may be a big consideration in the end. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Clemson, are also good engineering schools in the southeast, but again- tuition may be a big factor.

Renssenlaer Polytechnic is similar size to Lehigh. There are many more. NCSU engineering admissions is competitive and may be the best option for the price.

Thanks for the input and additional schools to look into.

kmarie, Are you instate for NCSU? My husband and oldest son are NCSU graduates. H was a MechE major. S was not in engineering but took the engineering sections of Calc and Physics (Required for NROTC). Both loved their experiences at NCSU and are fiercely loyal alums. The campus is not traditonal looking but it grows on you. After all, lots of scshools have a quad but nobody else has “the Brickyard”. The new Centennial campus (engineering) is first rate. Raleigh is a great/fun city. You can easily walk to restaurants, shops, etc on Hillsborough St. NCSU football games have to be experienced. Even if you’re not into sports you can’t help but get caught up in the excitement of big time ACC sports. There’s always something to do at NCSU/Raleigh plus the weather is great…no dragging to class in freezing temperatures/snow on the ground (well, rarely anyhow)!

What state are you from?

I believe NCSU is a very good engineering school.

I am from Maryland but would prefer an out of state college. Yeah when I visited I saw the Centennial campus but it seemed so isolated from everything. I don’t mind the brick at NC State- I just dislike how spread out everything was. Either way, I have been thinking about it and I’m leaning toward State as a first choice school. Any tips on ensuring admittance into the engineering school? There’s no essay so the process seems to be mainly based on your statistics.

Make sure you at least apply to UMD. The engineering school there is excellent.

For NCSU, I’d expect academic stats to be most important.
