So I have been lucky enough to be accepted into State for undecided engineering and UNC for applied sciences (it’s a new undergrad major which is basically their BME program.) I’m on the fence about where to go, I know state is known for their engineering especially in NC and have a stronger program, but UNC carries a better brand name and I very much intend to go to graduate school, probably for research. At UNC I probably have the option to change majors, but at State I most likely will come out with a stronger GPA. There are a lot of pros and cons, and I personally love both schools but am not a die hard tar heel (honestly I like state a little more.) Anyway I was wondering if anyone could give their thoughts or if you had any experience with either one of schools so I could make a better informed decision, thanks!
*Also please ignore my grammar I’m sure it’s terrible
I would consider the costs of each option. You don’t mention whether you are a North Carolina resident.
Oh sorry, haha I’m from Charlotte, NC so I am in-state. The cost isnt too much of an issue since they’re both pretty close I think UNC is a little cheaper…
Boy, that is a “good problem”! I have visited both campuses and each has a distinct “feel”. You should consider how you feel in each place. Since you are a comfortable distance, I recommend visiting both schools again. If you are committed to an engineering major, State is definitely the better option. You could also choose one for a day and imagine you’d made your decision and see how it sits with you. You don’t even have to tell anyone else you are doing this!
Don’t get hung up on brand recognition. Each school will have recognition in it’s respective areas. Both schools are great. BUT - if you want to pursue engineering NCSU is the best choice (it’s that whole brand recognition thing again). Of course, I have to admit that my knowledge is limited to the engineering programs - having gone through the college search process over the past few years with 2 sons, and my own years of engineering experience and working with folks from lots of schools.
One of my son’s went to UNC, one to NC State. In my opinion, this is a no brainer for Engineering - NC State. Their program is amazing. They have something like 17 engineering majors - second in number only to MIT. The BME program is in partnership with NC State I believe - so check that out. If you do not like BME you do not have any other choices at UNC - there are lots of engineering choices at NC State. Of course - you have to have the grades to get accepted into the program once you are at the school. Good luck.
Wow, thank you all for the helpful tips. I really like the idea of pretending to have made my choice for a day, and I am sure to visit both the campuses very soon to make my decision. I think my main concern is what can get me to a better grad school… but either way it’s clear to me they both have their strengths, and I don’t think I can be making a “wrong” decision here
