NCSSM Class of 2016- Future Applicants

@pastelblue Just keep bugging them until they do it!

@pastelblue I agree with @willsister1. Just keep bugging them (politely, of course) until they send it. Worked for me.
@foreignlawyer HA, that happens to me all the time. One second, I’m like, “Yeah, I can do this!” and then the next, I’m like, “LOL I’m so screwed.”

Also, I was just reading a few (pretty cynical) posts about going to NCSSM. I know this sounds a bit foolish, since we don’t even know the results yet, but I’m curious about everyone’s views about attending NCSSM. The courses are challenging for sure, the workload is huge from what I’ve heard, and 97% of the student body don’t make all A’s. There’s lots of people saying that if you’re already pretty stable at your home school, with all A’s and good courses and teachers (which I’m sure is the case for all of you guys), just stay there instead of NCSSM.

There’s plenty of other dark stories, but at the same time, there are positive ones, too. I know that I shouldn’t be crossing the bridge before I get there, but once I heard that we only have 48 hours to decide what we’re going to do with our results, I started trying to decide in advance because I just know that I’ll panic and do something stupid. So what do you guys think? What are your decisions so far, and why?

I apologize if I seem to be nosy, I’m just trying to decide what I should do… T_T

If I get in, I am definitely going, unless something drastic happens with my family from here until April. Everyone I know that has gone has had an awesome experience except for one. He left after first trimester, but he was also very LAZY. I think that as long as you are willing to work and are willing to accept that you are not going to always make straight A’s we’ll be fine. NCSSM is a great opportunity and is too good to pass up.

@whiterabbit98 Honestly I’m not entirely sure what to think about that. If I go to NCSSM, my gpa will probably be ruined and I won’t be at the top of my class… but at the same time, if I stay at my current school next year there won’t be a math course for me to take at my school, so I’ll have to enroll in a class at a college, which is both expensive and out of the way. At my current school I’m taking Latin online, but at NCSSM I could actually have a teacher. I also really want to try fencing, which I can’t find anywhere in my area! Most importantly, I really want to go to a boarding school. I’d say that if I get accepted to NCSSM there’s a 75% chance I’ll accept. I probably won’t get in… unless I do… ah! I really have no idea if I will or not! The suspense is killing me!

@willsister1 I don’t know if I can accept not making straight As D:

@iceesky Your GPA and class rank don’t matter if you go to NCSSM. GPAs are calculated differently there (Its in their student handbook. I wanted to know what I was getting myself into.) and they don’t have class rank. I have a 4.89, am number 1 in my class, and have made straight As my entire life. I don’t just want straight As to get into college; an A tells me that I have learned something new. I want to go to NCSSM because I will be in an environment where everyone has the same common goal, to learn and better ourselves. I want to surround myself with people who don’t just want to “get by” with flunking.

@willsister1 @WhiteRabbit98 I’ll bug her after we get back from spring break. I just don’t want to annoy her too much.

@WhiteRabbit98 I had the same dilemma during the beginning of applications and decided to still apply. I talked to my teacher who taught and attended NCSSM. He told me that most of the dark things posted online are posted by this guy that graduated a year after him. Since he graduated from NCSSM, he has the school on Google Alert and everytime he reads something bad about NCSSM, it’s always almost written by the same guy. The guy blocked him once on Facebook since he pointed him out. Anyways, he wanted to let me know that different people will have different experiences and that you just have to make the most out of it. His mistake was that he’d hang out with a group of people, then that group would leave and he’d hang out with another, then that group would leave and he’d hang out with another. So, he ended up not doing a lot of his work because he didn’t realize that after the group he hung out with left, they did their work. He didn’t. By telling me all of this, I’m really excited for NCSSM and am 100% sure I want to go.

Thank you all very much for your responses!

@willsister1 I agree that NCSSM really is an excellent opportunity, and getting accepted is quite the privilege! You seem very strong and prepared for the challenging environment at NCSSM, which I admire. In the past, I’ve always been fairly adaptable and able to rise to any challenge presented to me, but my main worry is that I won’t enjoy myself at NCSSM. You aren’t a teenager forever, and I’m worried that I’ll waste two years of my life that could’ve been spent happier and closer to my family at home.

However, from what @pastelblue 's teacher says, I suppose that there’s never any lack for social interaction, you just have to be able to make good decisions, LOL.

@IceeSky I’m also a bit reluctant to let go of the row of all A’s on my report card… ._. There’s also the possibility that if I do get in, I’ll bomb the placement tests and I’ll have to retake a course, which I don’t think will look too hot on my transcript. NCSSM definitely seems to offer a lot for you, which I’m glad for!

But anyway! I’m very thankful for everyone’s input. It certainly helped me a lot.

18 DAYS, 20 HOURS, 30 MINUTES, and 13 SECONDS until results are out! I hope we all get in!

I don’t want to bomb those placement tests. We had a sub for 9 weeks in Chemistry. I had a good grade in the class and it would look bad if I retook it.

I hope all of us on here get in. You guys seem like the type of people I would want as my friends.
18 days. 4 hours. 10 minutes.

@willsister1 I agree. If we all get accepted to NCSSM and go, we should get together as friends. We were kind of “friends” before we even knew each other :)

Wow, you guys are all so dedicated…
I’ve been looking at this thread for the past few weeks and I decided it was finally time for me to join :stuck_out_tongue:
Hello!

@supremenoodle Hi! I am in love with your username.
@willsister1 I second that! Everyone here seems really chill. I hope that when we all get in we can all become good chums.

18 DAYS, 2 HOURS, 24 MINUTES, and 7 SECONDS. Fdkfwofjekjowafs.

Ive been stalking WhiteRabbit’s posts so I had to make an account. Im waiting for April the 3rd as well. Im kinda worried a bit. How did everyone do on the test. I did about 20 out of 30 plus I had AP Stats the whole year so we barely ever covered algebra or anything similar at all. Im in CD 8 and Im also a minority (Native American) and I live in the poorest county in NC (Robeson), and I also Have high SAT score compared to my schools average.

@NintendoFan2298 Welcome! I’m honored that you found my posts interesting, LOL.

As for the test, I blanked out a little, and ended up leaving two unanswered. Naturally, I thought of the answers as soon as I walked out of the classroom. But I’m pretty confident in all of the questions that I answered. How do you know your score already? :open_mouth:

Salutations from CD 6.

I meant I left about 5-10 blank on the questions.

@foreignlawyer Yes, I will attend Andover next year.

@NintendoFan2298 Hello from one of the other poorest counties! I completed all of the questions, but my friend scored about 30 points higher than me on the SAT math portion and didn’t complete 10 of them. Factoring is my strongest math subject, though. I’ve been doing college PreCal and I felt like it helped me a lot because we can’t use a graphing calculator. (we can’t even use scientific calculators on some things. we have to use calculators that only do basic computations.) I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you did good on the ones you did, they will recognize that.

I completed all of the problems on the math test
but I felt like some were worded a bit funny idk so I may not have written my answer in the right format

like “find the factors”
I wrote (factor) and (factor)
instead of (factor)(factor)
i don’t even know that probably made no sense hahah
