Idk why it did that. Its “I need a pencil”. If you Google it comes up.

Would it be worthwhile to double up on on French and finish French 4 before going to ncssm. How hard would it be to exempt the foreign language requirement? But I kind of want to take the ap French exam. Also I heard I should take ap physics and chemistry before ncssm so i can take the more interesting classes at ncssm and bypass the graduation requirement at ncssm.

I have heard the exemption tests are really difficult for all classes. I would take the AP French exam.

My school does not offer any sciences besides Earth Sci., Physical Sci., and Biology. I’ve taken the first 2. We do not get to choose our classes and only Juniors are allowed to take Bio. I’ve asked several times to take it but they simply won’t let me. Do you think this will hurt me? I made a 99 in Earth Science and a 100 in Physical.

Thanks! I’ll check that website out. My essay was fine I think but I always miss 2-4 grammar problems ugh :(

At November Open House the science person said they generally expect people to already have taken bio but in your case, you couldn’t, so I don’t think they’ll hold it against you. Maybe include that somewhere in your app?

I wish I had taken physics this year… sigh, too late now

My kid (Class of 2015) was very good at Spanish . She took two immersion programs freshman and soph. year in Minnesota and Spain. She took Sp. 1 through IV at her H.S. She was set to start AP Spanish this fall (before getting into NCSSM). She placed into Adv. Spanish at NCSSM. There is also a level of Spanish above Adv. Spanish (like Spanish Lit?). She’s making A’s, so it’s a good fit for her. I think it will depend on how rigorous your French courses were at school. She also completed AP Phys. and AP Chem. (with 5s) before going to NCSSM. She exempted the first level Chem. and Phys. courses. Exempting these courses is a mixed bag. First, the courses are harder at NCSSM than typical AP courses, and you come in behind for the advanced NCSSM courses. You have to learn a lot of lab procedures, programming and other issues to come up to speed. Most of the other kids have had a year to get accustomed to these things. In Physics, you have to make up the lab part of the initial course—which means an extra load of labs that first trimester. I’d be glad to talk more about this issue, if you PM me. Good luck to everyone!

I did include it in my app. I’ve already submitted mine because I felt like I was going to keep messing with it and screw it up.

I’m completely stuck on the essays. I have no idea how to answer them. How did you guys tackle the questions?

Seems like a lot of us are only applying for residential.

I read the questions over. I redid the first question like 4 times. I wrote the “character” like a standard essay. The “how will you contribute” question was the easiest for me. The adversities was the hardest. I just wrote what I felt like was left out from my personality for the last question. I edited them several times. At open house they told us to get others to read them and I did.

@willsister1 - How many words did you say about yourself? I don’t want to go overboard.

I also have to go on the first Discovery Day.

@pastelblue On which question? None of mine were below 1450 characters.

Oh no, I meant on the question similar to “What words best describe you? Give an example of when each word reflected on you.”

Oh! I understand. I used 3 because that was all I could fit. I explained how I was each one and how they made a good candidate, how they helped me excel, etc.

I had the hardest with the how will you contribute and had a fairly easy time writing abot adversity, hahah opposites. For the picking words to describe yourself, all I could fit was two but but i chose words like passionate and had solid, specific examples

How are y’all feeling about Discovery Day? Does anyone know what classes the test covers? I’m starting Pre-Cal on Monday. I want to be able to prepare for it. I know you can’t have a calculator.

I dont think it covers precal and i heard it was really easy so I wouldnt worry too much

Okay good! I just don’t want to screw it up. I did “ehhh” on my Math part of the SAT so I want to do pretty well on it.

@willsister1 - I saw a post that had what to study or what would be on the test. Hold on, let me find it. Wait, I just found it and it’s for Welcome Day not Discovery Day. But maybe it can still help. Here it is: http://courses.ncssm.edu/math/ProsStudents/placement.pdf.

I think I’ll be the same with loltired. How exactly do they want us to reply to the question on how we’re going to contribute? Clubs, volunteering, etc.?

What exactly is on the math test? Is it a similar format of the SAT Math I?

I put clubs (joining and creating), volunteering, sports ( volleyball), hall/social life, stuff like that.

That is what I was wondering about the test. It seems like it changes from year to year from what I’ve seen by researching it, but I can’t find anything from last year. Some people said short answer and some said multiple choice. I have a friend, a senior, who goes to church with me. I’m going to ask him on Sunday. If he comes (they are going from Winter Break Sunday), I’ll ask him about his experience.

Yeah my math was my worst score on the SAT. Maybe because I didn’t study for it but… :(

I wrote that I’d volunteer and do my best to help people lol
I also wouldn’t worry too much about the essays. I mean, I’m sure they count for something, but my friend who’s in class of '15 said that she looked over her essays from last year when she was moving stuff around on her laptop and she said they were complete bs hahah.

and holla for not having to take a placement test because of calculus… but a diagnostic test sounds just as bad uh

The diagnostic test thing is for Welcome Day, I think. We all have to take the Discovery Day one. On my October test, my writing was the worst. Naturally, I studied for it. I did the best on it in December, making Math my worst.
