NCSSM Class of 2016- Future Applicants

I think it really depends on the classes your school offers.
And if you do well in those classes.
Some schools offer lots of APs and some don’t.
Don’t fret so much about it! :)

Is cd 8 a competitive district?
I am currently the only person applying from my high school and I live in a small city (and county) which only has an early college and one high school.

I don’t think so.

I just finished all my essays (and had my sister read over them, she went to NCSSM like 5 years ago) and I’m basically done with my entire app!
I’m nervous though, since I know at least 8 people applying from my school lol and a few of them are the genius types who got a 800 on the math portion on the sat when they were taking it in 7th grade for Duke TIP.

Just try to be different than all of them. Say something on your application that they don’t have.
Good Luck
What cd are you from?

@Starr011

What type of extracurricular activities did you have?

Good luck to you, too!
and mhmm
well i’m not worrying myself too much over it because i could always appeal if i dont get in and who knows, maybe id be pretty well off at my current high

*high school
wow, just noticed that :frowning: typing on a phone is hard

I should start on my application soon. How long are your essays?

3 of my essays are within 50 characters of the 1500 character limit and the other two are 1200 characters +

My sister talked to her friend’s dad, who’s part of the admissions committee at S&M, and he said they’re looking for more well-rounded people, instead of only science and math people

Alright, I don’t think I’ll be applying for the online program. There’re way too many questions and I don’t think I’ll be able to handle 2 classes on top of my regular ones, being an online class on top.

Haha, yeah, that’s precisely why I didn’t apply for online.
but if your school lets you (and I’m pretty sure the majority do), you can take the online classes during the school day instead of another class if you get what I mean

Hello. I am excited to have ventured upon this page. Its feels good to know others that are applying. I am from CD 1. What Discovery Day do you guys have? I have the first one.

How do the NCSSM Foreign Language courses relate to normal public school courses. I see that NCSSM has introduction, intermediate, and advanced french, but my school has french i ii, iii, iv, and AP v. If I finished french 3 in sophomore year which course would I be enrolled in in NCSSM?

@kkpanu9 I went to an open house and asked the same question. You take a placement test and they determine where you should go. If you feel like you deserve higher you can appeal.

@loltired I only applied for residential. I felt like online wouldn’t be very compatible with my current school, an early college.

BTW, I just wanted to wish everyone good luck.

I have the first discovery day, as well! Maybe I’ll see you there, hahah. Good luck to you, too!

Have you guys taken the SAT yet?

I have. My scores were iffy. I got 150 in each section above my school’s average though. I went on a field trip back in October to NCSSM and a lady in admissions told us that as long as they were about 100 above in each section we would be fine. I took it in October and December because my writing score was not up to par the first time. I studied mostly for it and increased it by 130 points.

Ahh well it sounds like you have nothing to worry about! Just wondering, how did you study for the writing?

My parents are making me take a subject test this January and retake the reasoning in May/June for college. :(

I used this website for the grammar questions: http://************.ck12.org/ I asked my English teacher to help me the week before the test on the essay part… She told me that you need to be specific. The first time I took it, I used a lot of hypotheticals. You have to use examples from novels or real life examples.
