NCSSM Class of 2018 - Future Applicants

Residential Finalist as well

Congrats everyone!

And good luck to you

So, unfortunately I didn’t get into either program but I have a couple of questions for anybody willing to answer. Is being a non-finalist, different from being wait-listed? And what happens if they do accept your appeal statement?

Residential non finalist; will see if other people in my school got in before deciding to appeal

Parent of current NCSSM senior here- if you aren’t a finalist, you can appeal to be put on the waitlist. They will make waitlist decisions in the next few weeks, then let you know if you got on the list or not.

A good number of waitlisted kids got in last year- my daughter’s year, fewer were able to get off the list. So, go ahead and appeal if you want to be considered!

PS- waitlist decisions are rather arbitrary. There is a committee who choose, and many other considerations come into play- they don’t have to be “fair” with CDs, stats, etc. Sibs, legacies, and donors are given a good look

I wouldn’t wait too long my friend said when she tried to write out her appeal it logged her out and wouldn’t let her back in

@jaejay Same here. I submitted that I wanted to peal but I can’t get back in.

@LolImANoob Oh dang have you tried emailing the admissions team?

@Jaejay I have and I’m in touch with them right now. Thanks for asking!

I’m a residential finalist and I accepted but my parents can’t get their logins to work so they can’t accept and now I’m so freaked out I won’t be able to go!!

smathstress - I am the parent of a newly accepted student. I logged into the “family” account and the only thing I have seen is paperwork to fill out and bring to the April 16th onsite day. To me, it appears that if you logged into Uniapp and selected “I accept”, you are in. Anyone else see anything different?

Regarding the “appeals”, I am not certain since my son is a Finalist, but at the Open House, they said the appeal process simply puts you on the waitlist and you would not be allowed to enter ANY further info. I am not sure there is anything to do other than select the “appeal” option. That might be why it logged you out and won’t let you back into the system. If anyone else has seen something different, please reply.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted, and good luck to everyone who is appealing. And I still can’t decide whether to go or not. Does anyone know how attending NCSSM affects college admissions? Like for example, would Harvard pick a public school version of me, or an NCSSM version of me?

@jswani I probably wouldn’t be able to directly answer your question unless I was of Harvards admissions officers myself, but I’d say depends on how you do at NCSSM. remember that at NCSSM you may not stand out as well among your peers, but you also might be able to explore new opportunities (NCSSM is very research intensive, which may work to your advantage). At your previous school, you might have had straight As, but at NCSSM because of course intensity and work load you might not. There are definitely give and takes with coming to NCSSM. In short, NCSSM isn’t an easy key to ivy leagues, once you get here you still have to work hard.

Hey everyone I have a quick question. How are my parents supposed to use their log in information to access the NCSSM paperwork and doc stuff because I’ve tried to use their login information and it always leads to my student account! Any help would be appreciated!

Do our parents need to accept somehow for us to go?

I decided against going. It wasn’t the right opportunity for me. Good luck to everyone else.

Residential Finalist! To any future try-hards looking at this thread
let it be known that the discovery day test barely matters! I didn’t finish a lot of the test, had subpar SAT scores, and still got in from a highly competitive area. Good luck to everyone appealing, and see you next year to all the finalists!!

@dancingdisaster What CD are you? I slayed the D-day test and SAT (2290) and have 4 A’s and an A+ in the hardest classes i can take as a sophomore at my school, play sports, volunteer, am in several clubs, and am halfway through my eagle scout project and still didnt get in even with all that and great essays/evaluations. I am CD2. All 3 people at my school are appealing
