@Gandhiswag thank you, my school average scores are about 1300 and on my practice sat test I’ve been scoring 2100. I normally make straight A’s and maybe a B every now and then.
@DesmondLesesne With your stats, I think you have great chance of getting in. However, for the volunteer work, when applying to NCSSM, I suggest to leave the actual hours out of the transcript. Stating that you have worked only 2 hours at the local nursing home, doesn’t sound as appealing as just saying that you volunteered at the local nursing home. That way, NCSSM admissions don’t know the actual hours that you performed. They’re left guessing. This is just my opinion and what I would do. Hope this helps(:
@treepanda Yeah, I agree.
So, I am kinda scared to ask but here goes. I live in a very rural part of NC that is a redneck haven. I have always felt out of step with everyone here. I did decent on my SAT 2000. I guess my chances are good. I really want to go because I hear it is a safe place for kids like me. Do you guys know if it really is a place for LGBT people?
NCSSM is probably one of the most LGBT friendly schools in the entire state.
Just as a general note, start studying for the SAT now so you’re not juggling a ton of things when you start school. You won’t get a very good score without studying, (generally) I learned the hard way
Oooh and has anyone read through their course catalog? The amount of math classes they have gives me a mental boner.
I got accepted into NCSSM. Class of 2017!!! But the point is, you never know exactly who or what they’re looking for. My SAT score was a wimpy 1640, I had already made three B’s in Math 3, Biology, and Chemistry. I had little to no volunteer hours and didn’t really participate in after school activities. But I excelled in all of my engineering classes. So for anyone who is reading the stats of other people… Do your self a favor and don’t. Comparing yourself to others is no way to go and you’re just going to get discouraged. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
@IHaveAMilkChance Congratulations! I totally agree with what you’re saying but you still have to stand out to them someway. Its not like you have to win an award in “theoretical nuclear intergalactic business physics or underwater basket weaving” as MIT would say but you have to stand out in a way to make you valuable. You were accepted for being yourself, the part of you (that you claim) that stood out to them was your excellence in your engineering classes. The main reason why people post and read stats is to understand how people stand out and how they ‘should’ stand out which isn’t necessarily a good or bad thing unless you think you’re inadequate because you’re different from the people that ‘look good’.
Then there’s the weirdos like me who want to know every single detail about NCSSM and their admissions process.
@IHaveAMilkChance You give me hope :o3
@Pheeziks Same here; I’ll be researching the pros and cons of NCSSM. To be honest, if I got into NCSSM I wouldn’t know whether I would attend or not

Hi! I’m applying to NCSSM from DC 9 which I heard is SUPER competitive and I’ve been really stressed out because I heard that most people applying from here have SAT scores above 2200 and have tons of extracurriculars. Also they’re mostly asians and I’m just another asian female (apparently this year they’re accepting more males than females) and I’m somewhat well rounded but not spectacular in anything besides photography? Also my school didn’t let me take any APs my freshman year or double up in math so I’m kind of screwed over in that department. Could someone please tell me what my chances are and how to make them higher? Also I’m really screwed in that I took non honors classes(3!!!).

This year I’ll be in National Art Honor Society, Mentors Club, Environmental Club, Key Club, DECA, Yoga Club, and hopefully I’ll be in National Beta Club and I’m thinking about starting a HOSA club at my school

My class rank is 20 out of 250
I’m applying for NCSSM this year after waiting for this year since 2011! My sister was wait-listed, but never got in, and I’ve wanted to attend ever since. I really feel like this is the school for me, down to the unicorn mascot (my spirit animal haha)
I’m so nervous to apply, especially reading other people’s stats. I’m from CD 4, which is the wake county one and it’s EXTREMELY competitive. It would be a dream come true if I were accepted.

I have no idea how I will do on the SAT, my practice test scores have been kind of inconclusive so far, but I’ll most likely be taking the November date and then retaking if they suck.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ll make it. I’ve heard that the biggest thing they look at is what you can bring to the school and what will make them look good (they gotta get them tax dollars whoop whoop), so I am hoping my national titles with GLSEN will give me points. Because honestly, I feel academically inadequate compared to a lot of you guys. Regardless, I hope to be class of 2018 unicorns with you guys!
@ktisaunicorn Dude I am so jealous of all your extracurriculars! You have so many and it seems like your such a passionate advocate for the LGBT community! I’m sure NCSSM really likes how well rounded you are and how focused you are with your activism and DUDE SO MANY EXTRACURRICULARS WOW
@smathstress THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really feel like my extracurriculars are going to be my saving grace if I get in. I honestly have no idea how I keep up with all them and school work! Haha, I guess I just don’t really hang out with friends all that much.
@ktisaunicorn I totally agree your EC’s are out of this world!
Also does anybody know the stats (or where to find them) for the average SAT score at NCSSM or the average SAT score for each congressional district etc?
@smathstress I think the average stats are about 1900-2100. I would aim for at least a 1800, but anything above that is great!
im in CD-4 with a 2200 sat score but i have a 3.8750 weighted GPA and 3.2857 unweigted, im in Boys scouts and beta club. Do i have any chance?
Hey guys! I’m from the Charlotte area and I’m an Indian female. I’ll hop on the bandwagon and post stats
Classes:
9th- H Spanish 3, H Biology, Biomed Tech 1, H Math 3, H PreCal, Health/PE, H Civics/ Economics, H Eng 1, Latin 1
10th- H Eng 2, AP World History, H Chemistry, AP Calc AB, AP Stats, H Physics, AP Spanish Lang, AP Calc BC
Thinking about self studying AP Chem or AP Physics
Grades:
I’m a straight A student, very slightly below a 5.0 GPA (don’t remember the exact number)
ECs:
I swim competitively and have been on my school’s varsity team.
I have been doing Indian classical dance for 9 years and am currently preparing for my “graduation” performance.
I’ve been playing piano since I was 7. In addition to piano, I play flute, clarinet, Alto and Tenor sax, and the guitar.
I am a classical Indian singer and have been trained classically since the 4th grade.
I do a certain math competition independently that I would not like to reveal (I’m insanely competitive :)) and have been their state winner twice in a row.
I do this quiz bowl thingie that’s not through my school either.
School-wise, I’m in HOSA, Model UN, DECA, FBLA, Mock Trial, Math Club, Chemistry Club, Key Club, and Beta Club. I have officer positions in HOSA and Mock Trial, and hopefully Model UN after we do elections!
Volunteering:
I volunteer for all these Indian cultural festivals around the Charlotte area (as well as perform in them).
I’ve helped organize and participated in fundraisers for the March of Dimes, Stop Hunger Now, JDRF, Epilepsy Foundation, International Rett Syndrome Foundation, Fisherhouse Charity, and Epilepsy Foundation.
I volunteer at a nursing home year round.
I used to tutor disadvantaged children at the Opportunity House.
I regularly volunteer at the Discovery Place (a local science museum) and teach classes there.
I volunteer at a UNCC biology lab and hope to get some research in there!
I volunteered and spoke at the NC Green Power Initiative conference last year.
I sort toys and help collect toys for Toys for Tots every weekend from after Thanksgiving- Christmas.
Through all of this, I usually get a couple hundred hours annually, not to mention all the wonderful experiences!
Summer:
Duke TIP Summer Studies is where it’s at! I did Debate my first year and Genetics this past summer. @smathstress was in my class!!
SAT:
Oh lord… Can we not?! ~X( My score right now is not so hot, but I will definitely update after my practice test on Sunday. I’m self-studying and have the tendency to misbubble my answer sheet.
Discovery Day and Open House: I’ll be at the November open house and the Feb 27th Discovery Day.
These are only stats for high school, I honestly can’t think back to middle school ECs I feel so inadequate compared to most NCSSM applicants! I truly hope we will all be accepted and will be Unicorns next year! It’s absolutely surreal to think that our lives are moving so fast and that all I’ve been aiming for for the past couple over years will be set in stone in just a few months…
Also, I’m thinking about starting a blog (similar to @FlamencoAngel 's of NCSSM CO2016) describing my hourney through the application process, documenting my thoughts, etc. If I (hopefully, fingers crossed!!) get in, I would love to continue the blog to document my journey. Anyone looking to coauthor? Please private message me!
