Hi. So I researched my school SAT average, which is 1250. So it is above it, but it’s going to be at the bottom of applicants. Thanks for the help!
@AceRed
Just remember that your SAT score is only being compared to those at your high school and that is overall a small part of your application. The rigor of your schedule and your extracurriculars look really good. As long as you write compelling essays, I think that you will do great!
@AnJa26
I would be sure to emphasize why you need to attend NCSSM. Maybe talk about how you are going to run out of STEM AP’s before the end of senior year. You could also talk about not having challenging extracurricular opportunities available. Such as internships or summer programs.
Thanks guys!
Has anyone taken the D-Day test?
If so, how hard is it?
@AceRed according to a friend of mine who took it last year and got in it was “really easy” and didn’t really have much Math 3. She told me that it was mostly Algebra and not to stress it.
@AceRed I’ve also heard it’s pretty easy and stressing about it can cause you to do worse.
Also does anyone have any tips for the application, I’m planning on submitting it today and it’s so stressful.
Hey I’m a sophomore from CD 9 Sun Valley High School. Can someone chance me. I feel like I’m way underperforming compared to others applying

I’m nervous cause I took no APs and didn’t realize NCSSM was an opportunity until middle of 1st semester sophomore year. I wanted to do APs but my school doesn’t really offer them to sophomores. I wish I’d doubled up on math last year and thus year but it was too late. I REALLY want to get in cause my school has like no STEM stuff and I love computer hardware and semiconductors. I emphasized that in my APP and I’m confident in my Essays. I just hope I don’t get screwed because I don’t have enough math or APs
P.S. Sorry for the long post
Hi, I am also applying this year. Your grades look good, and so are the type of classes you are taking, eg. honors. Your SAT is way above your school average, so that should be a plus. And, the way that I think they accept people, are from the school, and they choose the best candidate(s) from that school, and then match them with others. Because not all schools function the same way, and NCSSM knows that. So, I guess just showcase yourself in your essays, and don’t worry about the classes, since it is a characteristic of the school and not you. Your extracurricular look great, with the leadership. A suggestion, is that you could maybe create a STEM club, or make a small team with others in your community and participate in STEM. Hopefully this help!
Also, thanks everybody for helping me out.
Any thoughts on IB or AP plus NCSSM online program?
I am sure that the NCSSM online program is excellent and will offer a greater challenge than what most HS in NC will offer. I guess it depends on the maturity of the child, the ECs they are involved in at home, etc.
If your question is if does the online program fit in better than IB vs AP, I cannot really comment on that?
@Carolinadad If you child doesn’t want to apply to the residential program, the online program is an excellent choice. It’s an excellent way to get access to advanced STEM courses that might not be offered at your local high school.
Hey guys, for the Discovery Day math test, do you guys know the best way to prepare?
@AceRed it depends. What math are you in right now? Study for that.

As an Explanation for the Preparing for AP Biology Honors, my school does this strange thing where for most of the AP Classes, I get a Preparing for AP Class Honors for the first semester and the AP Class for the second semester even though the entire year is the AP Class. I don’t get it but it’s annoying.
@PugMug I’m pretty sure its actually 26 + - 2.5 (average per cd)
I am also wondering how to study for the discovery day math test. I have been told by people that I’ve asked that it’s easy and to not study but I’m in BC Calc currently and I’m genuinely worried that I may have forgotten some of the material, despite the fact that it’s easy. Does anyone know of any resources or particular topics/ past math curriculums I should use to study? Thanks.
Maybe a Khan Academy quick review or just a few practice questions from each EOC for Math 1 to PreCalculus?
@icantfindany we don’t take a placement test. We fill out a form about our math background and then do some basic diagnostic test stuff like derivative, series, integration, l’hop, etc.
