NCSU Vs Penn State for CS

Pls give some inputs on NCSU for CS for me to come with a decision.

COA approx same - hence cost is not the consideration.

Location, job prospects, internships - what would you choose?

Both are great schools with PSU being ahead ranking wise… I’d expect both to have good job placements and internships … in Virginia I see a lot of PSU and Michigan alumni and I would expect it to be a more recognized univ… since my son got in it seems I see a lot of “We Are!” Lol have you visited both campuses?

Thanks @airway1 - which major did your son get in? I am looking at CS in particular. Is Penn State good for CS?

CS ranking PSU 30th so expect it to be a great program… kid got into Petroleum Engineering we are heading to the accepted program to get a feel of the school end of feb (program in Virginia not on campus)

CS is literally NCSU’s middle name. How could you go wrong?

(Disclaimer: Not to be considered actual advice)

@ppxyz123 have you been to each campus? I would expect you to find State College and Raleigh radically different from each other, one being kind of in the middle of nowhere and the other being in the western part of a state capital and medium size city.

@Cheapdad00 not yet. Thats the feedback i want. I understand Penn state is a college town so want to undestand from a current student if that matters. I like NCSU for the fact that it is closer to downtown and can practically get away anywhere as airport is within 30 mins

Comparing, I attended NCSU and have visited PSU, they are similar in size. PSU main campus is a little larger I would think, but NCSU has the new centennial campus which more than doubles it’s size and is very modern. Both are great schools and are very traditional colleges. As you mentioned Raleigh is a much larger City and part of the Research Triangle, so there are many technical businesses both on campus and nearby.

from CS majors there they’ve said at NCSU there are recruiters commonly sitting at tables in the main lecture building for CS kids a lot of the time (not the career fair); Surprisingly they said your GPA matters a lot, which I would not have expected for CS jobs, since not quite as critical for other engineering. Also, NCSU has great co-op opportunities in engineering where students (if they want) can mix and match semesters/summer with job internships (paid) to get a leg up on permanent employment. Since CS is in COE I’d expect CS has that. (but not sure). Also, raleigh/durham/RTP seems like good spot for future employment opportunities in this and related fields. Weather not bad. Centennial campus where all the CS and EE buildings are is like new.

Thanks @anon145 - so only kids with a certain GPA can participate in talks with recruiters or attend career fairs? I hope thats not the case.

no @ppxyz123 anyone can talk to the recruiters of course, however, the current students said that a lot of the companies had GPA cutoffs for who they would realistically pursue… This was not a career fair, the students said they were frequently hanging out in the building implying that if you are CS with strong grades you won’t have to leave your classes to find a job
