I have read that dorm and roommate is randomly assigned. Is the assignment based on the sooner you commit, the “best” dorm you will be assigned to (i.e., location on campus, A/C, etc.)? Or is this done for everyone after May 1 commitment date?
(I know students say the best dorm is their dorm, but I’m curious when ND assigns)
@gbnnynd Yes. I am wondering if a student commits to enroll in January for the Fall 2020, do they have a better chance of a nicer dorm than a student who commits in April?
The only time they change roommates is if the random selection ends up with two people from the same zip code. They tend to have way fewer issues compared to colleges that use matching algorithms or self-selection.
Dorm assignments came out pretty late in the summer IIRC, maybe mid-July.
Yes, if I recall from my ND 2024 daughter she got her dorm and roommate assignment at the same time, and pretty sure it was soon after the 4th of July.
@collegemomjam It’s pretty late in the summer…mid-July sounds right. It was a little agonizing for my class of '23 daughter to wait that long, but she was in touch with her roommate very quickly after finding out. The only people who seemed to have trouble getting in contact with their roommates were people who had roommates who were traveling. Also, you might want to look for the Facebook page of parents for your student’s class. There’s a fellow named Roger Williams who’s handled the last few years of these groups…he’s done a great job. Finally, there’s probably an IG page for your student’s class…my daughter made a lot of friends there before school started.
FYI - on the ND website there are some fun videos related to residential life. You can see the inside of some of the dorms. You will not find room layouts for the dorms, so planning can be a challenge. In general, a double has room for a fridge and a futon in addition to the furniture supplied. Every dorm has a variety of room sizes, so it is really tough to generalize. You can search for residential life on the website if the link is removed from this post.
