NE Prep School for 5th year of high school?

I was hoping people could share what they think might be valid reasons for sending a child to a NE Prep School after 4 years of high school and before college.

Is the hope of getting into a better college a good enough reason?
To be more competitive at sports?
To allow for an additional year of maturity?
Other reasons?

Most PGs I have met are boys with excellent sports skills who are accepted by the schools to contribute to the team, and are “rewarded” with a “name” HS diploma, aggressive college counseling, a very nice social life, and a chance to spend more time on applications.

Girls often do not choose PG year because their social situation may not be as fortunate as the boys (girls typically do not want to socialize with younger boys in HS), although an occasional girl with scholastic interests may be found in some PG programs.

My two cents: Frankly, I would prefer it not be a part of the high school scene because 19 year old kids and 15 year old kids have pretty different perspectives. However, with the emphasis on athletic competition, I doubt PG programs will ever stop.
