nearby restaurents

I will be visiting yale this weekend and saw a post on here a while back about some eating place near campus that seems famous or infamous...a cheap eats sort of place...hamburgers maybe??? Anyway, can any one identify that place and/or make a few suggestions of a few places that would be interesting for a visitor?

thanks

Probably Louis’ Lunch is what you heard about? supposedly the birthplace of the hamburger. Also famous is Pepe’s or Sally’s Pizza.

Here’s a good thread:

How about an order of garlic bread smothered in mozzarella and a Greek salad at Yorkside pizza followed by Ashley’s ice cream down the block!

We’ve been putting kids through Yale for the last 8 years so have some experience here. I’d agree on Yorkside for a quick bite - salad and a slice are staples for us. For great tapas: Pacifico. For great ethnic: Istanbul Cafe.

Miya’s sushi was pretty good. Thali Too was a nice vegetarian option.

Mamoun’s is a really excellent Middle-Eastern restaurant near Yale

For comfort food (not necessarily great food, definitely not gourmet food) I also like Clark’s on Whitney/Temple.

Gotta represent for Claire’s Cornercopia, a funky vegetarian cafeteria on the corner of College and Chapel. My wife was Claire’s first employee when she bought the Karmel Korner in 1975.

Also Mamoun’s and Yorkside. But honestly one can get similar falafel or pizza and Greek salad almost anywhere in urban America.

Pepe’s or Sally’s is a religious experience. They are a hike from campus, and not anything one can do quickly, but Wooster Square pizza is the one thing that is both unique to New Haven and ultra-world-class in its category.

Despite its fame, Louis Lunch is Not Interesting For A Visitor (or anybody else).

I bow to your wife for having that distinction. I love Claire’s. Claire’s is the one eatery in New Haven that I would be really sad to see close. This thread is making me hungry.

My daughters love Claires, the food and desserts. : ) They have Basta an Italian restaurant next door also, not vegetarian.
