Necessity of the SAT

Are there any colleges that demand the SAT (like you can't just take the ACT w/ writing instead)?

I was just curious because I checked many college websites and usually they require 2 SAT subject tests at most in addition to either the SAT or ACT with writing.

Does this mean I can avoid the SAT?

Yes.

Most schools nowadays take both tests. However, if you score poorly on one test you may score higher on the other. They are structured a little different.

To my knowledge, all schools accept either the SAT or the ACT. (Harvey Mudd held out for quite a long time, but they accept the ACT now.)

If you did well enough on the PSAT to be considered a National Merit Semifinalist, taking the SAT and doing well will increase your chances of becoming a National Merit Finalist or Scholar, and these awards can get you merit aid at a lot of schools.
But no college actually requires the SAT specifically.
