I can't get my assigned transfer coordinator on the phone at UNC-W for a few more days (Answering machine says she will be out until later in the week) The admissions office can't really answer many of my specific questions, so I went searching for answers online which led me here. I have about 56 credits that I KNOW will transfer for UNC-W. Out of these transferable classes my cumulative GPA is somewhere around a 2.7. I took the SAT once back in 2010 as I was trying to give myself a shot at a better school since back then. I got a 540 CR, 490 M, and 480 W. Not the best scores, I know but I can't imagine many transfers even submit an SAT. I will be considered an adult by the time of fall 2014 enrollment, which is when I am shooting for. I am currently at wake tech taking a few more college transferable classes, If I do well in these classes it should raise my GPA to a 3.0. If the deadline wasn't in march for transfer applications I'd be able to get a few more classes in there to boost it even more, but that won't be an option, I can only send a notice that I am taking those other classes. Looking around the web I found that the average transfer GPA is a 3.1. I will also be transferring with an Associates in General Education, as well as an Associates in Business Administration (applied science). I will also have certificates in Accounting, Leadership, and Business. I have plenty of years of work experience in a leadership role, and neither of my parents went to college, or finished HS.

I noticed that the transfer acceptance rate is actually pretty high @ 81%, which gives me a little bit of hope.

Also when should I get my application in? It should start in a couple of weeks, but I don't want to send in my transcript until I can enter my newest grades (and hopefully 3.0 GPA) but I probably won't be able to get that in until January. Should I just send my application, essay and HS transcripts (which are horrible btw), and wait on the official college transcripts? I have already sent my SAT scores to the schools records. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Also Considering UNC-C as my second choice. I will probably apply to NCSU but I already know it’s a huge reach, it’s just my nearest university.

Another bump, am I doing something wrong?

I guess that means I don’t have a chance.

Your strategy of waiting till January is good, esp. since transfer admission dates are much later on. Check if there are deadlines for transfer scholarships, you never know.
Your odds are pretty good actually, especially if you can reach that 3.00 GPA.

I did some serious GPA number crunching just now and came up with a 2.92 with my current course load, will be my maximum. If I retook 1 course I could bring it over a 3.0, but it would stop me from transferring with the business admin degree. I think the 2.92 + degree looks better than 3.0 and no degree.

Bump. Looking like that 2.9 is going to be set in stone (unless I can get them to accept other courses that I scored high in) I’m looking for more opinions please!

What if you took the SAT one more time? It may not “count” officially (you don’t have to send it, but a score at 1500+ would certainly help, and more so if you can get to 1650) but it’d certainly look better for you.
Can you take a quarter course or a short course where you’d get an extra A to push that GPA?

I do have a score of 1510 as it stands. Speaking with a representative at the school they told me that it would not even be looked at for a transfer student though. I will see if there is some other course I can take, this would be the week to register for the course if I could find another one. Even a PE course that transfers would bring my GPA up right?

I’ve tried to find classes that would be for this second mini mester (I’m enrolled in one as it is) and I have not found any that would fit my needs and transfer. None for next mini mester either. Many of those end march 3rd as well. My cut off date for transfer is march 1st. Should I just enroll in classes for next semester to show that I am taking them in my application?

you don’t need a class that transfers, just another class that would help raise your GPA. If your adviser sends your transcripts on March 3 (typically advisers have about 10 days to send the transcript, only YOUR part needs to be in by March 1) that grade would be added. It may not transfer but since your #1 goal is to raise that GPA, it’d fulfill that goal, you don’t care if it doesn’t transfer and you get into UNCW :).

Well the thing is the cumulative GPA only goes by transferable credit. I’ve already spoken to the admissions office there. They take your transcript and determine what classes transfer and then take only those classes into account when calculating your cumulative GPA. I have other issues now. When they released the application for this year they changed the transfer requirements. They want a ton of specific classes from different sets that they prepare. I would need to take at least 6 more classes before I could apply.

Okay, it’s an opportunity for you to raise your GPA! Can you take 1 of these classes as part of a quarter or mini mester, and 5 others next semester, and apply with these? Is that “6 classes” in addition to the classes you planned on taking this Spring or is that a set of classes you could take instead of what you took this Spring?
Check out UNC -C and UNC-R to see if their requirements have changed too!
