Need Advice for an REU - Got Myself in an Awkward Situation

Hello everyone,

If anyone could offer me advice, I would really appreciate it. I recently accepted an REU at college A (that will accommodate housing and my gluten-free diet - I have Celiac disease), and I rejected an REU at college B because they do not accommodate with housing or with my diet. If I'm going to go across the country, I don't want to have to take my car to find food just because I have Celiac disease.

However, college B accepted me first. I did not sign a contract, so I did not officially accept. However, I was in touch with them. I had two weeks to officially decide.

After emailing my decision to the director of all REUs, I got an email back that wasn't very nice, saying that my behavior was unacceptable and irresponsible, and that I can't do this.

What do I do?

I emailed college B directly that I will not be attending and told college A that I will be, but I'm worried my reputation will be hurt simply because I /almost/ accepted college B and the director seems to think that's the same thing as signing the contract.

Can the director stop me (i.e., funding for me) if I want to go to college A?
