hello, i'm an american student at a very competative public h.s. in CT, USA. My dream schools are Oxford, Yale, NYU, and BC. I am in10th grade. For next year my schedule was supposed to be the following:
AP US history
AP English Lang
Ap Bio
AP Gov and Pol
AP Macro
Pre-Calc
French 3 Honors

however today I found out that I will have to choose between AP GAP and AP Macro, these were the two classes I was most looking forward to taking. My only concern is that for Oxford where I plan to apply as a Poly Sci major, they want U.S. students to submit 3 AP exam results pertaining to the field of study you are applying in. This makes me think I should take AP GAP this year and AP macro senior year however this year I am taking Economics Honors which helps to prepare you for AP Macro. So the more logical succession would be AP Macro this year. I'm not sure I could submit the result of this test to Oxford because I dont think that they would say it pertains to my major. Which course do you guys think I should take and which filler course do you think I should take: Journalism honors, sociology, or civics?

I assume that by Poly Sci you are talking about PPE (Philosophy, Politics & Economics). You should be aware that many UK students will be applying without studying P, P or E at school, and certainly not all three. That is why the Oxford website says that history or maths are “helpful” for PPE, but that no subjects are essential (which it does for other subjects). I would actually say that maths is more than helpful; both philosophy (logic) and economics draw heavily on maths skills and showing your ability in it would help to reassure them that you would be capable of meeting the demands of the course.

On APs you should be aware of the tariffs applied by UCAS to the various AP subjects:
[UCAS Tariff: Advanced Placement Programme - US & Canada](http://www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/factsheet/app.html)

My advice would be to look as far as possible at Group A subjects. Group B subjects are assessed as being roughly equivalent to half an A-level.

thanks! your input and link helped a lot!!

Following up on the table of tariffs, I suppose a thing to do would be to take two related Group B subjects, e.g. GAP both US and Comparative, or macro- and microeconomics. From the expert group report it looks as if the last two taken together would be more akin to a UK Economics A-level. That would mean taking more APs overall.

i would love to take those particular two sets of AP’s its just that my school doesn’t offer all four. We only have AP Macro and AP GAP, if they had AP Micro and AP comparative I would be first in line to take them because I love to study those two subjects. I feel that so few people my age and in general have much too little knowledge about how the county’s two biggest institutions work(the economy and the government). Sorry about the rant LOL, anyways thanks for the advice once again. Good luck with your school!
