Centre College Vs Dickinson College
I just got off the waiting list from one of the schools and having a hard time to choose between these two.
I want to major in economics and math, so which one do u think is a better fit?
Also I have got an offer from University of Waterloo with honor and Co-op in the faculty of Math.
So among these threes, Could anyone offer some suggestions? Thx

Centre and Dickinson are peer LACs with good econ and math departments. Of course, if an LAC doesn’t do those well they might as well close shop.

My son’s friend has decided on Centre College. One of the factors though was he has family in the state and his parents are thinking of moving back to Kentucky.

The difference between the schools is size: Centre College is pretty small and while Dickinson is not big it is approximately twice its size (1000 versus 2000 kids).

As you are an international student, Dickinson draws many more international students from many more countries. Having been on campus in April, I can tell you that they are really trying to build on this even more. Our tour guide was from China. Centre College also draws a much smaller percentage of kids from out-of-state.

There is also more buzz around attendees as is evident from their facebook groups

Have you had the chance to visit these schools? I find it dicey to select a school without (at least) having visited the campus.

I don’t know about the University of Waterloo other than it just doesn’t enjoy the same international rep of UBC, McGill or Toronto.

What will be your out-of-pocket costs at each school?

yea, the most attractive about centre is the size of freshmen class, a bit over 250. a lot of personal attention and cares from the professors. however, im not so sure about its location. i have never been to south and not familiar with the surroundings.
for dickinson college, im attracted to its international abroad studies, and foreign language program. also, i have been to phillies, so i kinda pictured out how penn looks like.
as for family contribution, they are about the same around 25k/year, however dickinson contains some loan and work study.these two totalled around $5000/year.

Waterloo used to have a very respected Computer Science department. I wonder if that is still the case, and if so, whether the quality extends to the Math department.

the computer department is inside the faculty of math, and its the most prestigious department in the school.

I would go to UWaterloo because the co-op program will help you understand what jobs are available in your field, the co-op program makes your education more practical.

im unfamiliar with canadian education system. i mean is it as good as american’s. as far as i can tell, the selectivity for the top schools in canada such as mcgill, toronto is par with wisconsin-madison, washington-seattle. so im a little worried about the student body and thats my primary concern

I think Waterloo probably has the best student body of the three. Most top Canadian students go to college in Canada and the best of them who are interested in engineering often choose Waterloo. Dickenson and Centre are good LAC’s but not top LAC’s.

Also, if you’re international you would get to stay in Canada after college if you want and that’s not the case in the states. Going home to another country with a degree from a school not know there might be tough. Most American’s don’t even know of these LAC’s.

What HMom says is true. I’m a US citizen, fairly knowledgeable about colleges in general, but until recently had never heard of Centre College. I’d heard of Dickinson but could not tell you much of anything about its distinctive qualities. I’d heard of Waterloo, though.

Now, I can think of some small U.S. colleges that would have relatively little name recognition among randomly selected people, but which are nevertheless excellent. You should do some digging to decide if Dickinson or Centre belong among them for your areas of interest or learning style.

thx both for the advice
