Can one of you knowledgeable parents please suggest a summer college program for my 9th grader? I know we’re late to the game but hoping to get a spot somewhere. She is very interested in science/medical field/anatomy. I think it’s way too late for CTY programs. Anything else? Thank you.
Look at your local Community College and see if they have camp/programs.
My DS did the program at Wisconsin last summer. http://prgms.wcatyweb.com. It is cheaper than the CTY classes. Madison is a great place to spend 3 weeks in summer. It isn’t just for Wisconsin students. We are OOS. There was also international students.
Did she ask to go to summer college or is this her idea. Let her be a child and enjoy her summers. She will be fine even without doing a summer college.
I would let her I enjoy the summer unless this was her ideal.
If this is her idea, help her fina a place where she can take the class on a not-for-credit basis. If she takes it for credit, that transcript (good, bad, or indifferent) will follow her for the rest of her life. It is a pain to have to keep track of all the extra transcripts, and if the grade is lower than she’d like, she’ll be back here in three years asking what to do about that old bad college grade on her applications.
My gifted kid did some of the WCATY programs in HS (they have changed course offerings/location-now fantastic). He dropped out of his third one because he was more interested in running and the then location was not good for distances. He did have a great time being with his academic peers- the best part of things.
Summer is for a break from school. No need to push academics. Your child, no matter how gifted, needs to be a kid first and foremost. No need to rush ahead in school work- plenty of time to be well educated and prepared for top colleges during the school year.
Reread post #4!
Mine will be working at the local Italian Ices stand; she got a job there about 2 weeks ago and is happy as a clam.
