Need-based aid on top of scholarship?

Does anyone know if WPI stacks need on top of scholarship, or is it one or the other? My son got a 22K a year scholarship, but that leaves a huge gap, of course, since our EFC is 4400. Unfortunately, he likely won’t be attending because of the cost, but it’s a great school and I wish something could be worked out.

Have you tried communicating with WPI’s financial aid office? Did you know that it is always a good idea to ‘appeal’ a financial aid package because there is a chance they might adjust in your favor? My understanding is that WPI is ‘need aware’ - google that as I wouldn’t explain it as well as others will. If you have received a preliminary FA package (I assume you applied for aid) you can always discuss with WPI FA office, the sooner the better. Good luck!

I believe that they can\will offer need based aid on top of scholarship aid. Call. They are very helpful in these matters.

Sadly, the additional aid won’t be enough. I don’t think an appeal will bring in 20k! Our EFC is 4400 and right now, there’s a 25k gap. Oh well.

Yes, they will stack a grant with his scholarship, however also loans and work study. They gave my d all three to go with her scholarship however the loan percentage was high and twice the amount as any other school. 9k/year. I was disappointed.

Smaller endowment schools simply have less to give. Great school, though.

WPI does give need based aid on top of scholarships. WPI’s need based aid is called “WPI Scholarship” or sometimes an endowed scholarship while their merit-based scholarships are listed on the website. Call them or better yet, send them a letter if you require more aid. Highlight your strengths as an applicant (more recent grades, achievements, etc.) as well as why you want to attend WPI but you cannot afford it with your aid package.

Let them know about any aid/scholarships you received at other schools (including your state U).
