Need Based Fin Aid from NC Chapel Hill, Univ. of Michigan and University of Virgina

My daughter would like to apply to NC Chapel Hill, University of Michigan and University of Virginia. We are Florida residents. Does anyone know if these institutions offer good need based financial aid (grants, work/study programs etc) to out of state students. My understanding is that most public/state universities offer very limited financial aid packages and mostly to their in-state students. But read somewhere that these 3 colleges have bigger financial aid/grant budgets and commit to covering 100% of demonstrated need. Is this so?..If so, does it apply to out of state as well as in-state students?

You can easily get that information on the school websites. Go to their financial aid sections and look up aid for out of state students v

Go to each school’s web site and search for net price calculator. Use it to get an estimate of financial aid and net price for your situation.

UNC-CH and UVA do claim to meet out-of-state need, but their definition of “need” may not be the same as yours. Last I checked, Michigan’s net price calculator suggested good financial aid for out-of-state students from the lowest income families, but not for those from middle income families.

The NPC for UNC-CH was very accurate for us- within $50. We found the aid at CH to be much better for us than for UVA (OOS for both).

UMich does not guarantee to meet need to OOS students.

UVA and UNC do promise BUT, they are extremely hard to get into from OOS.

Run the NPC on EACH schools’ website to see an estimate of what they might provide.

If you own a business, own add’l property, or are divorced, then the NPC may not be accurate.

When you ask if these schools give “good need-based aid,” that can depend on what you consider to be your need. These schools may determine that you don’t have much need, depending on your income and assets.

For divorced parent situations, include all income and assets from both parents and any new spouses they have.

For business or real estate, some schools add back deductions related to those, so you can run the NPC again with pessimal assumptions using revenue instead of income from those sources to get a more pessimal estimate.

Umich does not guarantee aids to OOS, but they do offer generous aid to students from very low income family. What is your family income? Definitely try their NPC.
