How does need-based financial aid work in NESCAC schools? Do they really give you the right amount depending on how much your parents make?
I am also being supported by the soccer coach through the ED1 process (committed) so does that help with the financial aid or no?
The NESCAC schools can have different financial aid policies, especially concerning international applicants. It sounds like you have a particular school in mind (“I am also being supported by the soccer coach through the ED1 process”). You will get better, more specific answers if we know which school.
Bates College
Bates is need aware for international students. even though you are being “supported” by the atlhetic coach for ED, it is the admissions department, who will decide if you are admitted. As a need aware school, your ability to pay will be a factor in admissions. However, if admitted, they will meet 100% of your demonstrated need.

As a Division III school, you will not get an athletic scholarship.
What if your family income? What will they be able to pay?
Also, it’s important to note that “demonstrated need” is determined by the Bates Financial Aid office, and not you or your parents, after that office reviews your financial aid submissions. That determination is based on several factors, including parent income and assets, student income and assets, household size, and the number of college students in the family.
Depending on income, assets etc will the financial aid office most likely give the “right” amount? If that makes sense.
The college financial aid office will take the data from your financial aid application forms. They will then use that data in their need based aid calculation formulas to determine how much need based aid you will get.
The formulas vary by college.
Keep in mind also, that most of these generous schools also require a student contribution.
Do you have competitive SAT or ACT scores, and GPA to get admitted to these colleges that accept less than 10% of applicants? Getting admitted is your first hurdle…and that is no easy task at these schools. It is thought that the admissions rate for international students is less than 5%.
You can get an idea how much Bates may cost your family by running their NPC. Although they do not guarantee that it will work for International students you can try. Use Hawaii as your place of residence if you do not reside in Canada. They take travel cost into calculations.

Recruited athletes usually ask the coach to arrange for a financial aid pre-read before committing. It may be too late now but you can talk to the coach.
I called the financial aid office and they said that they don’t do a financial aid pre-read. Should I still ask the coach?
I am not sure. You have already committed so if you come back with this question now it may create the impression that you are having second thoughts. It may depend on how desirable a recruit you are to the coach. Your call.
You can ask the coach at Bates all you want about financial aid. He will NOT be able to answer your questions…at all. He doesn’t prepare financial aid awards, and he doesn’t deal with them. Bates gives NO sports scholarships…NONE.
What do you think the coach is going to be able to tell you?
Is the coach pressuring you to apply early admission? If you need significant need based aid to attend, you can tell the coach that you cannot apply ED because of finances.
thumper, you do not know. The coach may have a pull in this regard.
OP, post the question on the athletic forum of CC, somebody with specific Bates experience may help you.

The coach may have “pull” in admissions at Bates IF this student is close to their admission requirements.
Coaches do NOT award need based financial aid. And Bates doesn’t give sports scholarships.
Now, if admitted, and Bates determines the student has significant need, that need will be met. Student will have a student contribution.
Will post @ the athletic recruits forum also! Thanks everyone!!
