@21stParent it depends on the school and if they are in a living learning community. Millikin allows instruments and singing only if your in the Arts living and learning community. My dd did have a small electronic piano in her room but she also had and used headphones with it. She asked permission from the RA to practice her instrument in the basement/laundry room area within reasonable hours. They started the Arts LLC her second year so no issue then.
@GloriaVaughn
ahh, thanks so much, he has headphones but the LLC sounds great since I know the tapping of the keys can be loud and worse maybe than pretty music!
I put this in the Baldwin Wallace board but I am not sure if it is very active so I will put it here too and see if any of you know this answer.
The conservatory portion of the website states:
The application and audition fee must be postmarked by November 1 to audition in November and by January 10 to audition in January or February.
Students may now apply for fall 2019 enrollment.
However the main part of the website shows only the November 1st date. Do you need to apply to both the main college and the conservatory or can my son just apply to the conservatory by January 10th
You have to apply to the university too, but if I remember correctly they don’t have an application fee, just an audition fee.
If you have any questions, email the conservatory admin. They are very helpful!
you always help!
I was asking because the main school date seems to have passed but the conservatory has not…but it looks like you can still apply. It’s confusing but yes I will email.
thanks, Loribelle
@21stParent I am pretty sure that BW take admissions applications through Spring. That date you saw was for early action. There’s a deadline for conservatory applications to allow time for scheduling an audition. Unfortunately, I am fairly sure I heard all of their Musical Theatre audition slots are currentlt full. However, It’s worth checking with them. They do a wait list for Audition slots. Best of luck.
oh, thank you, after I posted I noticed all the audition slots were full so I had ruled them out but I didn’t think they might have waitlist spots. My son really liked Baldwin Wallace so I think we will try to get on the waitlist.
Not to be a downer @21stParent but my D applied on the day that the slots closed last year (in October) was waitlisted for an audition and did not get one because no one canceled. They said they normally only knew of cancelations the same day and as you know it takes time to get from CA to OH, especially in Winter!
@CaMom13
ahh, ok…thanks for letting me know.
If only i wasn’t a muggle…i could apparate us there
I would just check with BW - apparation not being available we had to kiss our application fees goodbye and she applied before the “early” deadline. They were nice enough and they refunded the audition fee but - it was not a great introduction to the wild world of BFA apps. I hope you find enough great fit schools that missing the deadline on BW is ultimately not a huge loss.
I think her son was looking at alternative conservatory majors there other than the BFA MT too.
BW audition slots are full. We get a weekly email confirming that the slots are full and reminding us of our three options: stay on the waitlist, redirect ourselves to the BFA Acting audition, or withdraw our application by May 1st and get the audition fee refunded. We’ll stay on the waitlist (assuming nothing will come of it, but remaining open to the possibility) and withdraw for our refund once the dates of auditions have passed.
@CaMom13
Hey, that’s not fair they kept your application fee.
I don’t understand why they make an arbitrary number of auditions while they accept unlimited applications until a certain date. Why not just let everyone audition and then make admit decisions…at least then everyone gets a fair shot? Thanks for letting me know what can happen.
@loribelle I have mentioned that possibility to my son however he continues to hold fast to the Musical Theatre Major! We will see what happens.
Is there a limited amount of auditions you can schedule for schools who go to Unifieds, too?
@lovetoact
Thanks for the additional information. Good luck to your son/daughter.
I wonder if you get in the school for acting or music performance could you switch after first semester or first year to Musical Theatre and would scholarships etc stay the same?
@CaMom13
I just remembered the application fee is $0 on the BW music school website,now! At least they changed that!
That’s pretty nice! BW is one of the super popular schools that doesn’t prescreen so they simply allow applicants to sign up until they are at capacity - they don’t have enough time to audition everyone that wants to apply. Applicants “in the know” get their applications in as soon as the portal opens. We just weren’t “in the know”
My impression is you can’t transfer internally from a BA to BFA or BFA Acting to BFA or BM MT after admission at most competitive schools. Some schools say you can only audition once for the MT, period. I found a couple of exceptions to that (Temple and American U) so those were my D’s academic “soft landing” options - we figured if she didn’t get in the first year she’d have a chance getting in once she knew some folks in the theatre department.
@cmom13
Yes, I was so far away from the “in the know” category, lol!
Thank you, I will check out Temple and American U for backup if I can convince son to perhaps apply as piano performance major there if they have that.
Well my D was an “actor first” applicant and was okay with a BA so her soft landings might not be your choices but I think the Temple music school is well thought of and their cost of attendance with a merit package was very nice!
At the audition at BW a year ago, someone asked if you could audition to move into the MT class in your sophomore year if you were redirected to the BA. I remember the answer being yes, but it sounded like no one (or almost no one?) who had tried this actually made it in. Additionally, it wasn’t clear, but it’s possible that it would tack a year onto your time at college. I would ask some questions about that if your son is considering attending under a redirect with the hope of auditioning into the MT program.
