Need Class Schedule Help

Hey guys,

I'll be a first year in the fall.

What do you guys think of this schedule? I'm using the Class Planner, but I have no idea on rigorous a certain schedule is or not.

Math 10A - Stevens (0 Credits) (AP Credit given, but want to retake for mastery)
Chem 6A - Crowell (0 Credits) (AP Credit given, but want to retake for mastery)
Physics 1A - Sutterley (3 Credits)
Physics 1AL - Groisman (2 Credits)
Psychology 2 - Claffey (4 Credits)
Psychology 3 - Hales (4 Credits)

I'm a neuroscience and physiology major, btw. (Biology Department) I'm planning to take DOC (Marshall Writing Sequence) 2nd year.

I have 60 credits at the moment, from AP, so I'm technically sophomore standing? (Not sure)

Someone told me that you can't double up on two psychology classes. Not sure if that's true or not. If I can't or shouldn't, should I replace one of the Psychology classes? I need at least 12 credits a quarter to be considered full time right?

I'm also Pre-Med, if that matters at all.

You are sophomore standing, but that doesn’t really mean much for you.

You can take both psych classes. I don’t know where that person heard that.

If you’re pre-med you’ll need the chem class but I’m not sure you will need the math class (somebody who is pre-med correct me if I’m wrong). MATH 10A will be painfully easy for anybody who has done any kind of calculus before. What you did in high school was almost certainly much harder. I’m guessing you’ll realize this within a week and drop it.

Yes you need 12 units to be full time. Your schedule also looks fine. I don’t see anything inherently wrong with it. :)

like the $KingsElite$ said, it’s extremely easy. Even easier than high school calculus. Try doing the 20 series instead because that allows flexibility in changing science majors.

as for physics, you can do the 2 series and only do 1 lab instead of three witht he one series.

i see your taking 6 classes. Most freshmen that I know are taking 3 to transition in, but 4-5 isn’t bad either. 6 is kind of pushing it. It’ll be diffiuclt to manage unless you plan on studying all the time.

as for the physics classes and math, if you’re focused on knowledge, then take the higher series. but if you want guaranteed As, then go with the lower seires for high gpa for med school.

The PHYS 1 series isn’t a GUARANTEED A. Ha ha.

Don’t retake math – it’s a waste of time. My lowest grades through high school were in math but I aced math20c with an A+ because high school AP math really is that much harder…

Med schools tend to require 1 year of physics lab, so going the 2 series route won’t save you lab courses. I do wish I took the 2 series though – I feel like I didn’t learn much in the 1 series.

@$KingsElite$: Thank you so much for your post! Super informative and answered all my tiny questions, haha!

Thank you for confirming that I can take both. I absolutely love Psychology. I want to study other classes, besides just the typical pre-med sciences.

Unfortunately, AP Calc BC credit doesn’t excuse Math 10C, so should I just skip straight to that? I need it for major reqs.

Thank you!

@MakMan09:

Thank you for replying! If Math and Physics are pretty chill, wouldn’t 6 classes not be as big of a problem than if I hadn’t taken any of these classes before?

@Momosky:

Thanks for your input! So should I just skip to Math 10C/20C? I’m not the best when it comes to math, so I’m not feeling super confident I can tackle Multivariable just yet without a refresher… My lowest grades in High School are in math, as well.

Thanks for your time, all three of you! =)

six classes in high school = easy
six classes in college = suicidal

you’re not gonna have nearly enough time to study for all six classes as you did in high school

not necessarily.

two of the six classes are repeated classes, which is akin to asking a fourth-grader to retake addition and subtraction. physics 1A and 1AL go hand in hand, and the math contained in the 1 series is just algebra. it looks like a pretty good first-quarter schedule to me, apart from the fact that OP won’t be able to sign up for all those classes at once. (just because a class doesn’t count for credit doesn’t mean you can’t sign up for it – you’re still taking the spot of another student, so you’re only allowed to register for … 22? something like that? – at the start of registration. you can always petition for more.)

@ccnoob: Thanks for replying! I’m fairly confident that I can handle the workload. My high school has definitely prepared me! Junior year, I was taking 3 AP classes, 2 honors, 1 regular, and self studying two outside AP’s. Got 4’s and 5’s on all exams.

Add EC’s on top of that, too. This shouldn’t be THAT much more time consuming. Plus, the way college lectures are organized, I’ll have more free time out of class.

Thanks for your input, though. I’ll still consider lightening the load, since many people here are saying I should not retake math.

@astrina: Thank you for the info!

The math contained in the 1 series is just algebra? Can you please explain this? Do you mean that the calculus in it requires only algebra?

22 credits correct? I think I only have 21 credits so far (if you count the AP excused classes), but you don’t seem 100% sure on the limit, so I’ll be prepared to sign up later on, too.

Thank you for all your help! I really appreciate it!

I think you need to drop one of these classes, if not two. If you kept chem, physics and math, you might want to just pick up a 4th easy class (music, etc.). if you keep chem, phys and the 2 psych classes (i recommend this) you’re good.

someone mentioned, this isn’t high school. taking 5 classes can be done in college but it takes determination and is usually done out of desperation to graduate and/or thirst & ability. the average person doesn’t take 5 at once. until you’ve tasted college, you probably should not put yourself in that situation. don’t be that guy/girl who overestimates him/herself thinking s/he’ll be that exception to the trend. it’s a trend for a reason. 5 college courses NOT = 5 hs classes. Even with APs or honors

@KingsElite: lol, with Sutterley, PHYS 1A might as well be a guaranteed A :P

@92faim: Thank you so much for your advice! That’s true, I definitely do not want to risk pushing myself too far when I haven’t tasted college yet. I might just do what you said, doing chem physics, and the 2 psych classes, or just drop one of the psych classes to do the math.

I guess I should be spending my first quarter trying to find out where all the campus resources are, rather than spend all my time locked in my room.

Thank you!
