Hi all,
I am a high school junior and I’m struggling with the college search process. I have a weighted GPA of 4.4 and an unweighted 3.9. My SAT score is 2140 and composite ACT is 30. I am tenth in my class, class treasurer, and a member of student council as well as National Honors Society and I do a lot of community service with my church. I want to go the pre-med route and I prefer schools that are medium to large and near or in a city. I’m having a hard time narrowing down which schools to apply to that are in either New England or the Southeast. Also, the more affordable a school is, the better. I am the oldest child in the family so my parents are not much help in regards to college. If anyone has any suggestions of reach, target, or safety schools that would be a good fit for me that would be great! Thank you!
Hey,
Have you tried any college search engines? This one from the College Board might give you a few good ideas: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search.
Good pre-med schools: UNC Chapel Hill, Boston U, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins. Also, University of Washington isn’t in the east but I believe it has a very good program.
The honors program at your state U is likely to be your best - as in most affordable - option. All reputable schools will prepare you adequately for medical school as long as you complete the pre-reqs. Medical school is wickedly expensive so you don’t want to graduate with debt, even if you didn’t have younger siblings. U of Alabama also gets mentioned for the free ride they provide to talented out of state students.
Your other option is to apply to schools that are generous with financial aid where you are in the top 10% or so of applicants given your existing test scores/GPA. This strategy is consistent with being pre-meds because you want to be in the top of your classes academically and still have a life outside of school.
Look at these threads for some merit aid options. I know there are some with full tuition available for your stats.

Affordability may be an issue (don’t know your FA situation), but look at Emory.
