What are these schools like?

Hey guys I’m looking at a few schools but I want to know if it will be a good fit for me. I am having trouble visiting all these schools because a lot are out of state for me. Though it is still early in my college search so I would love any suggestions. I am thinking about majoring in biology on a pre-med track with a minor in public health because I hope to get a MPH in grad school.

If it helps for you to know I have a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a 4.0 weighted GPA for suggesting schools.

So far I have looked at:

Boston University
University of California Berkley
Kent State University (safety school)
New York University
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
Oregon State University (safety school)
University of Southern California
University of Virginia
College of William & Mary

Most of these appear to be OOS publics , and thus quite expensive. Not sure why you can’t visit, but if it is due to cost, these may not be good choices anyway.

Med School is very expensive. If your parents are not very wealthy it is usually best to keep the undergrad (premed) to a low cost. What is your home state? How about SAT/ACT scores?

I have not taken the ACT or SAT yet though my intent is not to go to med school it is to get an MPH but it can be very expensive too

Very expensive with a lower salary at the end… what is your financial situation and what is your home state? And why bother with the pre-med track if you don’t mean to go to med school? Sounds like a headache you don’t need…

I can answer any questions about BU that you have! Also, to make you feel better, I got accepted into and decided to attend BU without ever being able to visit. We couldn’t afford to go out-of-state school visits (I lived in Georgia). BU gave me a full tuition grant + work/study (ie: I had to pay room & board). Feel free to PM me–I can go on and on about my alma mater

Why are you choosing a premed track if you don’t plan on going to med school???

One key criterion for your search will be affordability. You need to talk with your parents (what’s their budget) and compare with your EFC. Out of state public universities typically don’t offer ANY financial aid to students who are out of state. Some offer merit aid, which will depend on your SAT or ACT scores - and those tests need to be prepared seriously since they test format familiarity, speed, and accuracy. Out of State private universities, especially LACs, will offer preferential packaging if you apply from 400+ miles away since you offer geographical diversity.

Boston University, New York University = urban universities, no campus, very selective, with NYU highly selective and widely known for lousy financial aid
University of California Berkeley = unlikely for OOS with 3.7 unweighted unless you attend a top-performing school and have lots of AP classes
Kent State University (safety school) = is a safety if you live in Ohio and are a B student. Not a very good school, low graduation rates, commuter. For a B student, Hiram is a much better choice. For an A student, there are better safeties in Ohio.
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill = unlikely for OOS with 3.7 unweighted unless you attend a top performing school AND are a legacy (there’s a cap on how many OOS students can be admitted to all NC public univerisites - after all, they’re financed by North Carolina taxpayers for their children. UNC-CH is as hard to get into as Ivies from OOS. If you like NorthCarolina publics, check out UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Asheville if you, Appalachian State, or NCSU if you want a large, urban, STEM-focused university.)
Oregon State University (safety school) = do you live in Oregon? If not, then it’s unlikely to be a safety budget-wise.
University of Southern California = highly selective so you’d need very high test scores and unique ECs.
University of Virginia = same thing + no financial aid if your family makes more than 65,000 a year.
College of William & Mary = same thing and no financial aid at all.

What is your home state?
