Hey everyone, here is my problem. I submitted my FAFSA on time and everything of that matter. Sadly, my EFC was near 8,000. I don't know how that happened as my mom is divorced and taking care of me and my little brother. My taxes shouldn't have had much influence because my income was only 6,000 bucks this past year. I have applied to many different scholarships but to no luck and I am down to loans :( The question i have is. Is it possible to be in work-study even though I wasn't eligible to receive it?

Your income would have had some effect. Students only have @ $3800 income protection allowance and anything over that (and a little extra allowance for taxes and FICA) 50% goes to the EFC. Also if you have any assets 20% of student assets go to the EFC.

You have to have a WS award to be able to do WS. If the school’s COA is greater than your EFC you have ‘need’ so you can ask if you can get WS. The worst they can say is no. WS funding is limited so ask sooner rather than later.

the income protection for students comes out closer to 4500+ once you factor in federal, fica and state taxes (but since those can vary depending on state that is why I said ~4500. If you made 6000 then about 1500 would have been ‘counted’ at 50% for $750 towards the EFC
