need financial aid advice

Ok, let me lay it out for you: i need however many scholarships/grants i can get that'll pay for 3/4's of, if not all of (preferably all of :) ) my freshman college expenses.
MY whole life is academic, and i'm looking for merit, because i dont know that i'd qualify for need (mom 45ishk a year.. 2 kids) I'm looking at the biology program at Hawaii pacific university, which is out of state for me.
I'm a sophomore, skipped 5th grade, and i plan on graduating next year from a high school ranked in the top 2 percent of high schools in the nation. Currently i have a 4.0 (unweighted) and by the end of next year ( my senior year) I'll have 6 AP courses and around the same number of honors classes. I dont have any standardized testing done yet, so i plan on spending my summer studying so that i can get a 30 or above on my ACT's.. i really don't know how all this works and i desperately need advice, help sources, anything!
Much thanks

Since your goal is Hawaii Pacific U, you need to visit their website and go to “scholarships” and see what they offer and what is required.

Some scholarships are “automatic” - if you have the stats, you get the money.

Some are competitive - I don’t recommend ever depending on winning one. Apply, but don’t “expect” - often many, many kids are competing for a limited number.

Your ACT and/or SAT typically needs to be high…Take both exams…some kids score higher on one than the other. You need to sign up ASAP for both tests. Get some practice books and practice…See how you do on the exams, and practice more to improve for the next set of exams. You’ll probably end up taking each set a few times to get the scores you need.

Is HPU public??? Applying to an OOS public school can be a problem if the school does not waive it’s OOS fees or cover them in a scholarship. It can be hard, if not impossible, to get financial aid (F/A) to cover those costs.

If HPU is private, than it shouldn’t have OOS fees, but privates usually cost a lot more than in-state publics.

FYI…merit scholarships are not considered F/A. F/A is determined by income. Your mom’s income is rather low, but if you apply to a private school, then your dad’s income will also be considered (if he’s alive.)

BTW…if your "chosen’ school is not a good merit school, I’m sure that you’ll find somewhere else that you’d enjoy going. :)

I know it might sound super cool to go to school in Hawaii, but since kids tend to need to come home a few times a year…T’giving, Christmas, Spring Break, End of year…plane trips can get very expensive for a lowish income family.
