Need help about GYLC

Hi! I am from China and I am thinking about attending the summer program GYLC-Global Youth Leaders Conference. I know it is a program mainly for international students. I am wondering whether it could help me apply for universitie. Some people told me that it was no help but a good chance to meet people and know about American cultures. And I really want to catch this chance to go to U.S to visit some universities. It is very important because I believe a tour to universities can help me decide which one suits me.
And I also have another choice to go to summer colleges like Cornell's. A friend of mine attended it and she was admitted by Cornell through ED. I wonder if the summer college can help me too.
So can someone give me some advice?
Thanx!

No summer program (except possibly RSI) will significant impact your college application. Remember, it’s not what you have to offer to the adcoms, but to whom they want the college to offer.

Chaseholl, that is an exaggeration to say that only RSI can have a positive impact on your college admissions. Here is a thread (pinned to the top of this forum) on this topic in general:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/343495-summer-programs-look-good-college-applications.html

Not sure if it addresses GYLC, though.

Generally, it is a good idea to visit colleges you plan to apply to if you can. I don’t think taking a summer course at a specific college gives you any edge in admissions (unless they have a “Why College X?” essay, then you have more material for that). What colleges like to see is that you pursued something you were passionate about in your summers if you can. If you can do that and visit the US at the same time (and can afford to do that), then pick a program in something that really interests you.

I never made such a claim.

I said, “No summer program (except possibly RSI) will significant [sic] impact your college application.” Last I checked, “significant” is not a synonym of “positive.” Obviously, GYLC will be a positive experience on a college application, but it is quite rare for a summer program to make a *significant/i impact.

I apologize if my tone is a bit terse or tart, but I do not take it lightly when my comments are misconstrued and then repeated incorrectly.
