A: I have been invited to the GYLC
B: I am an Australian
C: I have read the (confusing) opinions of CC'ers about GYLC
D: I am applying to Wharton and other business schools

Thing I already know:
GYLC is NOT a scam!

Thing I want to know:
Will going to the GYLC improve my admissions chances, esp. coz im an int'l?
Do adcoms take this as a sign of leadership ability?

I just want to sort out the confusion about this program.

no -- attending GYLC will not increase your chances of admission to a college. You might have a blast, it can be a great program for the right person -- but it is not selective and colleges do not take it into consideration when looking at applications.

It is not a bad way to spend your summer -- basically, colleges want you to do something with your summer besides reading romance novels and eating bon-bon's.

you could also consider volunteer work, travel, getting a job or an internship -- all would be productive ways to spend your summer -- but unless you got an internship at the World Bank or raised $50,000 to help build houses for the poor, none are going to help you get into Wharton.

I want to know whether GYLC is worth going to. However, I'm not interested in economics or politics kind of stuff. I want to do pharmacy, should I just volunteer in a pharmacy instead?

My daughter attended GYLC 2 years ago. It was a lot of work, but she loved the experience. She met a lot of people from around the world. She just got invited to participate in the 2009 presidential inauguation. Kids she met were very smart. It's not inexpensive, but well worth the money. Many kids from under developed countries had their whole village raise money for them to attend the conference.
