Need help-Andover 10th

I will be arriving at Andover on September 9 . So far I only know one other student, no dorm info and no reading list? How are the rest of my brothers and sisters feeling? Is anyone going early? Are there people there now?

If you have a facebook, you could use the 'search for classmates' function and find some people who you'll be with in the fall.

Don't worry, you will meet plenty of other kids during orientation, classes, and in your dorm. You should receive your dorm and roommate information very soon. I got mine today in the mail. There is no summer reading for 10th graders, and since schedules aren't out yet, the book list isn't either. Usually the list comes out pretty close to the start of the term. There aren't people on campus right now besides the teachers who live there. The kids who go early are usually candidates for a varsity team, prefects and proctors, and blue keys (orientation leaders). However, some students from far away go a day or two early and stay in a hotel so they can buy things ahead of time. The first couple days are confusing, but I'm sure you'll have a great time at Andover.

Kim, what grade are you going into?

When you said about receiving your roommate info, do you just name the people you'd like to be with and then they choose basically? so you have a good idea of who you'll get but not totally?

I'm going to be a senior this year. At Andover we get to choose our roommate, dorm, and room after our first year. I chose to room with the same girl after my first year and will room with her again this year. If house counselors feel that the kids made a bad decision they will often advise them to rethink it, but that doesn't happen very often. The info they send is more a formality after the first year than anything.

Ah, that's cool that you get to choose your room and your dorm.

I really love Archbold and McCook at Choate, but I heard McCook is a little sketchy or something.

found out yesterday: Foxscroft North. Sugarkim,is this considered a cool dorm? It appears to be very central to the action.* google earthed it.

foxcroft is a fun dorm. it's really close (which is awesome in the winter...my 3 years at andover i've lived on the outskirts, meaning 10 minutes of walking in icy gusts >_<), you get to sleep more, the new breakfast area (since commons is being renovated) is RIGHT next to the dorm, and a bunch of cool people live there. if you wanna ask them about it, i can give you their contact info. (i have buddies there) :)
hope this helps :D

ps. On Fridays all the Foxcroft boys wear ties. I don't really understand the tradition but it's kind of cute haha

Yes, it's definitely centrally located and an overall good dorm to be in. Flagstaff is definitely the best cluster to be in since you don't have to walk far for anything. I've heard that the house counselors are kinda strict in Foxcroft, but it also seems like a fun dorm to be in.

We just found out our d will be in Nathan Hale. Good, bad?

Nathan Hale looks like a hotel from the outside. I never went inside because it's a girls' dorm.

It's right next to the bird sanctuary and Pine Knoll is right in front of it. It's really nice.

It's the biggest dorm on campus I think. 40+ students.

Nathan Hale is a good dorm to be in since that's where the majority of freshman girls are. It's not the largest dorm on campus, but it's still big with 38 girls. It's also pretty close compared to some of the other freshman dorms.

Sorry, sugarkim. That's just what it says in the summer sesssion yearbook.

Paul Revere is the largest dorm which has 42 girls, so it's not like there is a huge difference with Hale

My D will be in Stimson West.

I found 38 girls with 20 single and nine 3-room double.

If you have a roommate, does that mean each girl has her own room and has a living area in the middle?

How is the dorm and how is the Pine Knoll Cluster? Strict? fun?
How far is the dining area?

Yes, there will be two small bedrooms, and a larger shared room. I've had a three room for the past 2 years and I really like it. I have company and privacy in one. I don't know much about Pine Knoll, but strictness usually depends on the dorm unless you broke a rule large enough to merit a disciplinary committee (cluster dean is present). The dining area for the first term isn't too far away, maybe 4 minutes or so. However they are renovating Commons and the temporary dining hall will be far from pretty much everyone.

Thanks for the insight. It certainly helps to find out ahead of time what to expect.

I wish we could have a dorm room views (kind of like Google Earth) for colleges and BS. It would be a stress reliever.

sugerkim or someone who knows: can you tell me something about Samaritan House? Thanks.

And where will be the temporary dining hall?

polyglotmom : How did you find "38 girls with 20 single and nine 3-room double"?

Sam on PAnet under the students tab in the Dean of Students box there is a link called dorm info and room composition. That will tell you how many students and what types of rooms there are in each dorm.
