Can anyone from BioEngineering give me some heads-up for the following courses I am taking this Fall? Anything will be helpful. Thanks
BIOE121
BIOE120
CHEM135
MATH241
ENES100
CHEM136
GEMS100

Your taking all those courses in the Fall Semester!?

From what I know, Chem 135 is like AP chem but only super sized… so be prepared!
GEMS100 will be an easy course, b/c its not really course, but an overview of the Gemstone program. You have your work cut out for you.

Can you major in BME as a freshman, or do you have to apply and be accepted after a year or two of classwork as another engineering major, with a certain GPA required for admittance?

UMCP is high on our list, but there are lots of schools out there where you have to apply directly to the BME program, or you can’t enter BME as a freshman, you have to apply and attend as engineering, and then HOPE you get into the BME program.

How does it work at UMCP?

Also, do you apply to the engineering school, or to the university in general, and then can decide your major later on?

@Montegut:

You have to apply to UMCP and choose Bio.E as first choice. It is very hard for a internal transfers (or external) to get admission into the Clark School. If your son does not get accepted for Bio. E., he will put in Letters and Sciences (thus, he will have to choose a non-LEP program).

Don’t understand your response. If he doesn’t get into BioE, he can’t be an engineering major at all? The alternative would be another type of engineering. Please clarify if you can.

Giminy crickets, what happened to the good old days when you went to college and they let you choose your major once there, or you could major in whatever you wanted, as long as you were accepted? I mean, really, just because you got Bs in math in high school doesn’t mean you can’t make it as an engineer. Or just because you had a bad day on the ACT doesn’t mean you can’t make it as an engineer. How many engineers have you met that aren’t Einstein? For Pete’s sake, my college choices are going from 20 to zero now because of this foolishness.

Sorry. Just had to vent there.

@Montegut:

It is very, very hard to get into the Clark School of Engineering. What I am saying is that if your son does not get admitted into Bio.Engineering he will placed in the general college (Letters and Sciences). From there he can choose any major that is not ‘restricted’. These incl. the Humanities and Basic Sciences. Eng. and other LEP programs (incl. govt., communication, psych.) are almost impossible to get into as a internal transfer (from w/in UMCP). One has to have a really good GPA to get internally transfer.

Again, sorry for the rant.

So, if he doesn’t get into bio eng, he can’t major in computer science, computer engineering, mechanical engineering? He could only major in maybe biology or physics or maybe math? Maybe he could pick up some helpful courses in those. And only if his GPA is stellar would he be able to transfer into bio eng?

Are you saying he might have a better chance of transferring out of UMCP, taking a couple of years at another college, getting good GPA, and then applying for bio eng as a transfer student?

I’m so sorry about being so ignorant. I graduated college almost 30 years ago, and only the Ivy Leagues were this competitive back then. I tell you what, I will never take my college degree for granted. Bless these kids’ hearts.

See this:

[University of Maryland - Limited Enrollment Prorgams](http://www.lep.umd.edu/)

Those are the majors that are heavily restricted. Computer Science is not on that list. If he does not have chance at being admitted into the Clark School, then I suggest taking a combination of computer/physics + Bio. courses to create a pseudo-Bio.E. major. If your son can ge a high GPA at College Park, he will have a higher chance at getting into the Bio.E. program.

Of course, we would hope that he could get into BME. Another college had suggested we apply to both the eng school and the arts and sciences school. Maybe that will be the way to go with UMCP. I am surprised that comp sci is not limited enroll, as I have heard that it is a stellar program. Thank you so much for the link. Got to think positive!
