So I’m an English major, hoping to concentrate in creative writing or a publishing area. Financial aid is a big factor, but campus safety is also up there. Location is not important to me.
I applied EA and was accepted to Drexel, Hofstra, Scranton, Simmons, and applied RD and was accepted to Rowan.
I was waitlisted at Fordham Lincoln Center, but am being told that I have a high chance of being admitted. Still waiting to hear from Lehigh, but I am expecting a denial, or at best a waitlist. If by some miracle I get in, I will most definitely attend there, but I’m focusing primarily on the schools I got accepted. Also waiting to hear from Syracuse, but am expecting admission.
Between these schools, in your opinion, is the best for an English major?
Additional info that may help: I’m from a small town on the Jersey Shore, so I live in a bubble. I adapt well to new places. I can’t go long without great pizza.
That’s what my mind set has been, but overall they’re all either in the same range or a little above.
This is what I got from them:
Hofstra: $27,000 (COA: $63,268)
Drexel: $33,900 (COA: $65,927)
Rowan: $2,000 (COA: ~$14,000)
Simmons: $19,000 (COA: $57,410)
Scranton: $17,000 (COA: $60,928)
I’m the first in my immediate family to attend a 4-year college, and I am also second-generation Irish, so I believe that helped financially.
Rowan is my absolute safety school, so in case something happens financially in my family where I can’t attend an out-of-state school I will go there. I wasn’t too impressed with them though.
I’m leaning towards Drexel, Simmons, and Scranton, but I really need opinions. Any help is accepted.
I am from a small town as well, and my mom is concerned about safety. She read the on line news for the towns/cities where the colleges are. There were a couple of schools taken off my brothers list (college junior) because of crime near campuses.
My recommendation is to think about if you will need money for grad school or a post-BA program.
I work in publishing, and find that if you want to work in “big” NYC-based publishing, the best chances for being hired are if you attend one of the publishing programs run out of NYU, Denver, etc. these are usually done the summer after your BA or are graduate level programs. The staff are almost all working publishing executives, and a lot of recruitment happens out of these programs.
If you want to pursue creative writing, many find that the MFA track is the way they want to go (not required to be an author, but it does give you 2 years of dedicated writing time and immersion in the literary world.
Neither of these paths is required to work in publishing (many are hired with BAs, including me) but they definitely give a leg up.
Here is a reputable list of good publishing programs, if you want to explore further. http://openroadmedia.■■■■■■■■■■/post/107527592073/the-best-book-publishing-programs-in-the-us
I would choose Simmons from your list of possibilities. Simmons is a smaller environment than the other two schools you are looking at and is in a very safe part of Boston.
