@Skippy00 have you looked into FIT in Melbourne?
I don’t know if it is offered at his school.
No
No what?
Most high schools have their curriculum available to review on line You can look to see if BC is offered.
Ok Im sorry I am going to ask again…would the net price calculator be more accurate for non profile schools? I know it won’t for profile schools because they will want business documents but will it for only fafsa schools?
No I have not looked into FIT @thumper1
@jym626 I asked him and he said it is not offered.
Check out FIT in Melbourne. It might be affordable with their merit aid…and it might have majors he is interested in.
I believe it was suggested a couple of times upstream.
Yes, I have mentioned FIT multiple times and others have too. They used to have some automatic scholarships- not sure if they still do.
FIT came back with a net price of 26k which did include
Half Tuition Panther Fund Scholarship
Panther Fund Grant
Florida Tech has a lot of automatic scholarships (based on gpa and scores), but max out at about $25k, which is just over half tuition. There is also $2500 for Eagle Scouts/GS Gold, some extra money for robotic teams. The merit aid seems to change every year. For this coming year, they are awarding 60! full tuition scholarships to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the school. Who knows what they will offer in 2019. There is some need based FA. Civil engineering is one of its smallest majors, but it has served my daughter well. She’s graduating and has a job. It does have a co-op program and many of her friends have had really nice paying co-ops all around the country so OP’s son might save on room and board if he can get a co-op near relatives.
But the loan is in YOUR name, so affects your credit limits and borrowing ability. If you are planning on your son borrowing the $27k a student can take, and also being responsible for the Plus payments, that’s a lot. His loan payments on the $27k would be about $300/month (@ 5% interest; the rates are going up). To add another payment (they can’t be combined) of $175 ($15k @ 7% for a Plus, and that’s being generous with only borrowing $15k in Plus and paying the interest as it accrues) would really restrict which jobs he can take upon graduation.
This weekend I’ve been car shopping with my soon-to-be working girl. She only has a $15k student loan (and she has $7k of that saved to get her started with a car down payment, rent, security deposit, etc), and the payment should be $160/mo. She qualified for a better rate on the car loan because I could co-sign (I don’t have a PLus loan in my name), and her car insurance is 1/2 because she can stay on my policy since I’m a co-owner. I trust her to make the car payments, she trusts me to sign the car over to her when she pays it off.
I think you are doing the right thing in looking at all the possibilities (and agree that you thought NE when you started, but realize your best financial fit may be elsewhere), but don’t take schools like UMass Lowell off the list just because your son doesn’t like it. He may not have many choices if he’s super picky. There are gems out there, but he has to keep an open mind.
Missouri Rolla is also a good choice. It is possible to become a Missouri resident in one year if he follows the rules (one is working in Missouri).
Clarkson University in Pottsdam, NY
Do you know about the UMaine Flagship Match Program? Maine will match or better UMass tuition for top scoring New England students. Scholarships range to 100% off tuition and fees for a National Merit Semifinalist.
Yep…the U Maine program was suggested about post 100. Apparently the net price is still too high for this family.
Yes @foobar1 we did know about that but found out that the engineering is better at Umass A and Umass L. My son is not a NMS. We will be touring Lowell soon and found out he will be automatically invited to the honors college there which is really great. Thank you. Lowell will be a last resort for him which he is lucky to have such a great back up plan.
Update… went to Umass Amherst today and S really liked it. The price should fit our budget because it’s a fafsa only school and we do not have to list our business assets because of the small business exclusion. With that said we qualify for Pell which gives us more discount. He also won the Adams Scholarship so that helps too. He will still apply to other schools but will be glad to have UMA as a safety.
Be careful to only have UMA as a safety. Especially engineering business sports or hotel management. CAS surely. The others are getting progressively more difficult.
That aside. If he could qualify for commonwealth honors college that would be the end of the search for me. It’s fantastic.
Yes we understand engineering is very selective so we will also have UML as a back up safety. However with an SAT of 1470 (790 math) and a 4.1 gpa he’s got a very good chance.
Yes of course.i only meant safety as 100 percent. But those numbers are fantastic.
Thank you he will be taking the SAT again so they will super score. Hoping to do even better!! NEU is his first choice but may not fit our finances.
