A little boring . . . but I think that’s a great list. Connecticut is a big community, and I think someone said there is a good new area (or being developed) with students in mind. It is pretty isolated though, at least it felt that way when we visited a couple of times 3-4 years ago. A couple of things on some of the other schools:

JMU: students love their experience there, and it has a great reputation in the DC area

Northeastern: heavy emphasis on coop, has become much, much more competitive in recent years, not that your son wouldn’t be a reasonable candidate.

Vermont: Burlington is a GREAT college town, spend a day there if you can, at least grab a meal on Church Street, a pedestrian street down near Lake Champlain, which has beautiful sunsets over the Adirondacks

UNC-W: nice city; nice, nice weather

South Carolina and Delaware: very good schools, nice state flagship campuses

U Mass, Amherst: Do you know about the Five Colleges Consortium: Students can take classes and otherwise share resources with Smith, Amherst, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke, which I think is cool, and psych might be a major where that is particularly helpful

Will you be able to visit some or all of these schools? Many are in great locations. Have fun, good luck!

I see Towson in there. Is that his in-state safety? If so, make sure he visits and finds some things to really like about it. Then encourage him to apply early next fall so he can have it safely in the bag in case everything else goes wrong. Happykid is a Towson grad. She loved her years there!

My other suggestion is that you run the Net Price Calculators at each college website. Some are more accurate than others, but at least they will give you a ballpark figure for what your costs are likely to be. The sooner everyone in your family is on the same page about what is and isn’t acceptable to pay for college, the more easily the process will go.

@happymomof1 actually , we live in Virginia , so actually Jmu might be his in school safety, although I’m not exactly sure it’s a true safety for him, more a match .

Towson came as per a recommendation .
Thinking it might be a good safety for him. Luckily , fiaances are not a concern so basically I want to make sure he is a list that looks reasonable with several schools that he can probably get into . Thanks for your response .

@TTG Thanks did your very thorough response and some inside info about some of them . Any thoughts of other schools that might be more interesting … he wants east coast and mid to big size with lots of sports .

Northeastern would be a reach as would Boston university . Think coop program at northeastern could help with what he’s interested in .

So far we have only visited Jmu off the list . He liked it but determined to leave Virginia . He is going to see Ohio state , pitt and Syracuse this coming week . Want to do a mid altlantic trip and northeast trip with him this summer and maybe a usc weekend trip as well .

Thanks again for your input !!

Ok so for the colleges on the list you have, most of them are good schools and your son has good chance for most of those schools. Some of the schools from are lost are quite questionable with your son’s grades and SAT is Northeastern, Both University, and maybe Syracuse. Also that SAT needs to be in the 1300’s as your son is aiming for, which is necessary to get into several of the schools you listed and for scholarships. Also I recommend that since your son has significant time until he applys, I would recommend that he does something that could relate to his major. Some schools I recommend are
Clemson,
George Washington (which could be reach if he gets that SAT up)
Binghamton (same as Stony Brook)
Stony Brook (could be a match but it’s going to become more expensive in the next years from 42k OOS for Tuiton/R&B to 50k)
Rutgers (could be a match but they don’t give much for OOS students)
Drew (it’s in NJ and quite a good small liberal are school)
Lafayette (could be a reach and another liberal arts school, also endowment per student rivals Ivy leagues)
Purdue (could be a reach or match)
University of Rhode Island (could be a match)
University of Maryland College Park (Really good Public School)
Loyola in Maryland (Affordable and know someone who is going their and got a ton of aid)
Susquehanna (Another good liberal arts school and gives good aid)
Gettysburg (Anorher Good Liberal arts school and in PA)
Good luck for your son and his upcoming SAT’s and senior year!!

@“SliceItOrNot?” Thanks for your feedback . His goal is to get his sat up to a 1300 at least . He’ll take at least 2 more times . I realize northeastern and bu are definite reaches for sure . But I know he would love to be in the Boston area . Wish there was a middle of the road option for him that was there .
We are fortunate that money is not an issue so it may be worthwhile checking out some of athose schools . Thanks again !!

BTW, I meant to say my response was boring, not your list.

Please make sure that you have the discussion about affordability. Have you run the Net Price Calculators? Have you set the budget?

@TTG ha ! Your response was not boring, still not sure about list

@suzy100 . Thanks for the feedback
. We have discussed affordability , and we are good . Mainly , just need to find the right matches . Thanks again !
