Need help finding affordable options in the Northeast.......

Huh? We live in such cold weather so it doesn’t make any difference.

Oh I got you mixed up,with another poster, sorry!

Trinity has a fine engineering program. I would VERY strongly suggest you visit the school before applying. It’s not for everyone.

Hey everyone…I met with son’s Guidance today and they told me he meets the requirements for NMSC because his index score was 198. We won’t know if he is a finalist until September. Fingers crossed…

Mass cut off for NM is 223. So 198 wont cut it, sorry.
he may make commended but not NMSF.
I’m surprised the GC did not have that information.

the NMSF cut off for NM SFinalist in Ma is 223. so unfortunately 198 wont be high enough. It may be enough for Commended.
I’m surprised the GC did not know that.

198 seems to be quite low compared to recent NMSF cutoffs. They vary by state, but the lowest state cutoff typically tends to be around 209.

Oh well that stinks then…

It was what we read on the report from the PSAT…it said he was eligible.

for Commended status, yes but not for Finalist.

I believe you but this is what it says… You meet entry requirements for the 2019 national merit scholarship program and your selection index score will be considered among 1.6 million program entrants. If your selection index places you among the 50,000 high scorers who qualify for national merit scholarship program recognition you will be notified next September when qualifying selection index scores will be made available

@Skippy00 You could also apply to UMass Boston and UMass Dartmouth. Why not? See how, much money they give you.

VT and GT very unlikely to offer him any merit. Try Tennessee, as they have engineering and good merit.

@chb088 which one in Tennessee?

Univ of Tenn in Knoxville. I know OOS kids with lower scores who got in for engineering with merit. Since you’ll need a significant amount of merit, this seems to fit your criteria. FYI, those kids are going. They didn’t get into our state flagships (NC).

@Skippy00

Operant word in the NM info is IF. IF you qualify…IF.

And while my kid got into both NCSU and VT, he didn’t get merit at either.

skippy, please download the 2016-2017 annual report

https://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/interior.aspx?sid=1758&gid=2&pgid=761&cid=1564&ecid=1564&crid=0&calpgid=61&calcid=1034

scroll to pages 9 and 37.

it shows that only 15000 kids qualify for national merit semi Finalist. and of those only 8000 are awarded national merit scholarships. the qualifying scores for those scholarships are based on the state the student comes from.
mass’s qualifiying score is 225.

@Skippy00 Its been four years now but I believe it was Simmons, St. Michaels, Clark U, maybe Ithaca ? and the one she is attending, Skidmore, each of them in the honors program. The ones that came close were Mount Holyoke, Dickinson and UScranton I believe.

You misread the UMassA numbers…the school will not come in at $10K. I don’t know anyone who goes there for that amount. UMass Boston has good merit and some of the other smaller campuses do as well. My D was interested in University of Mass in Lowell and while the academics are strong there, I nixed it for location/safety reasons. Not sure if they have managed to get a handle on the crime rate in the past five years but its worth a look too.

@bjkmom that won’t work because it’s only if choice of major isn’t available in my home state and it definitively is.
