need HELP finding schools, film production major

Hey,
So I am currently a senior in highschool (18 year old Male) and I am having a vary difficult time finding schools which offer majors I am interested in!

I want to get into film production, specifically the post production like special effects, green screening, etc. I am very good with computers and technology, but I am a creative person (English has always been my best subject).

Other fields I am interested in include animation, video game design, creative writing and journalism.

I live on the East Coast (Maine) and would like to stay on the East Coast, but am not afraid to go out of state.

My grades:
-3.4 GPA
-1750 on SAT's (retaking them this weekend)
-have taken only AP and Honors classes through out highschool
-not a lot of school-sanctioned extraciriculars but I've owned and operated my own local business for five years.
-mostly an A and B student, occasional C but not often.

I am from a small town so I REALLY want to go to a city or urban area. Boston is awesome, but I'm good with any place that isn't a small town.

Any suggestions where I should go?!? What schools do you think would have things that interest me? Right now Emerson College in Boston is the only one that I can think of. :(

Thank you!

Here is a big list of colleges with that major: [College MatchMaker: Results](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Can your parents afford to pay OOS rates? Do you need financial aid?

Hey Erin’s Dad,
thanks for the reply!

Yes, we can afford OOS rates - infact my parents encourage me to go out of state. I will hopefully be getting some scholarships that will help. Financial aid would be beneficial, but I’m not sure how badly we need it (if at all). Haven’t gotten to that stage of the college discussion yet, haha.

Have you looked at Emerson? It’s in Boston and sounds like it has exactly what you want.

haha yup, Emerson is actually one of my top choices. The only problem is that I didn’t know they required a sample video until about a month ago, and I don’t have anything together for the application… And it is a requirement to get into the Film Production major. :/

My son is a freshman studying film production at Rochester Institute of Technology and he is very happy there. His GPA and SATs were similiar to yours.(He applied to Emerson as well but was not accepted.)

RIT does not require a sample video for application to the film program.

thanks for the replies everyone,
CrewMom - I’m kinda worried now, how much stock does Emerson put into the sample video? I haven’t done one yet, but I wasn’t sure how serious they took that. Do you happen to have your son’s video online somewhere so I can see (assuming he had one of course).

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate it but keep 'em coming! :)

try…[Visual Arts and Film Majors - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/)

Drexel and Temple might be worth a look.

Prefix- Your portfolio submission to Emerson is very important as well as your GPA. You must be accepted both academically and artistically. The film program at Emerson is very competitive.
I believe you also have the option of submitting a written work but check the Emerson website for exactly what they require.

Check out RIT too…

How about Pitt(University of Pittsburgh), you may be able to get in there, and then Carnegie-Mellon has great film/special effects etc-I’d recom them, but you are unlikely to get in. They have a very liberal cross-registration program with Pitt, and if you did well, you might be able to transfer. Pittsburgh is a great city for students as well.

Pittsburgh is a bit far away from home for now, but it’ll be a consideration for transferring maybe.

Thanks CrewMom, I’ll check out RIT. I heard that the dorms there aren’t very good though, what does your son think about them?

Temple is becoming very popular with New Englanders. I have several friends here from Mass. and Maine.

Hmm, I have never heard of Temple… Where is it? Anyone mind linking me to their website? :)

(Sorry for being such a pain. I’m just so exhausted/confused/disorientated about all this college business!)

Cheers,
Prefix

Let’s see. Wouldn’t that be temple.edu?

I just cried.

Check out Ithaca College and their Park School of Communications. Awesome programs, Tech but Liberal Arts based. Daughter is a new Cinema and Photography major there. Very happy!!

Hey,
sorry to revive this thread, but does anyone else have any suggestions?

Right now I am applying to these schools:

UMaine Orono (safety school)
Emerson College
RIT
Champlain College
Ithaca College

Any else that would be good for film? I’m mostly interested in the post production kind of stuff - like editing, special effects, etc. Things you do on the computer. I’m also considering going into the game design/development field, so a school that has those classes in addition to film courses would be spectacular.

Thanks a lot for all your help so far!
