Hey all! I would appreciate any comments on the "walkman recorder" that Tanglewood asks the kids to bring. How much $ needs to be put into this? And would you recommend a digital recorder that can link to your PC (or not) vs. one with cassettes? Thanks in advance.

Also , any other items that you couldn't live without? We are driving out so there is some room in the car for "stuff."

Take a fan....rooms are hot. DS was there for two years and he would say that the fan was the one thing he could NOT have lived without. We also bought a case of bottled water...yes it was warm but he always had water in his room to drink. They DO have water for the musicians...but it was nice to have it in the room (under the bed).

And Humid!!
Mid session I brought up a dehumidifier for my D's room after she complained that the sheets and her clothes were always covered with dew in the evenings. They LOVED it at first, but after 2 days (and gallons of emptied H20) her roommate's clarinet started to crack! The contrast between the room and the outdoors was too great. I felt awful!

I'm going up on the 17th to bring my S to the workshop, and will be at that BBQ. We don't plan to attend the one at the beginning of the program. The food is not great, and it's basically an orientation.

I also don't plan to send him with a recorder. My D said no one had them (but that could be just instrumentalists.) We did need to bring hangers, a power strip and a lamp, in addition to the fan. Most rooms are tiny, with occasional exceptions. 2 girls shared one dresser of 5 drawers. My son is over 6 feet-one of those drawers could barely hold a couple of his T-shirts. I don't know how this will work, although I'm sure it will somehow. Also, there is a super Stop-n-Shop (or some such thing) nearby where you can pick up a case of water, laundry detergent, etc. and food supplies.

Can't think of anything else offhand. Feel free to ask. I think there are lots of Tanglewood alums and parents hanging out in CC.

Hello there.
Yes, I concur, don't bother with a recorder. No one has them. Things to bring:

-A fan. Most definitely. However, I just looked up the weather for Lenox, MA and it's only really going to be a high of about 82 all summer up there according to weather.com (which might be wrong, who knows)... but still, bring a fan.

-Case of water. Definitely a bright idea. Get a huge case of Poland Spring. I had a big case last year and it was great.

-Several towels. The towels at BUTI never seem to dry...so bring more than two or three.

-Alarm clock. You don't want to miss the bus.

-If you have it, bring equipment to fix your instrument. You're in the woods...the weather is variable...just take the necessary precautions.

-Hangers

-Laundry hamper or laundry bag

-Plenty of laundry detergent & quarters

-Flashlight

---Can't think of anything else right now...but if I do, I'll post it. I'm not going to be at the BBQ either...I'm flying in from FL and won't be there until 7:00pm unfortunately. Tanglewood's going to be great this year!!!!!!!!!!

Clarification on the fan...My son says...big is better. So if you're driving a box fan is great. We sent a window fan. He also said a small fan for the bed headboard (such that the headboards are...) would be a nice second addition.

My S says TWO fans are better than one (particularly if roommate forgets his). We plan to send him with two. Will be at BBQ...one of them...forgot which...how many are there? S sent everything in...S cannot wait...he loves the music they are playing this year.

Just an FYI...the first summer DS was at BUTI, it was dreadfully HOT. The second summer it was dreadfully COLD...especially in the evenings. Be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Thanks thumper! We leave this weekend....excitement is building! Another question....did the guys wear tuxedos for performances? It sort of looked like it on the brochure picture so we bought one (very inexpensive) for prom instead of renting so that he could use it. Now son is worried that guys will only be wearing suits.....any ideas?

As far a cheap tux goes, we paid $110 for S's tux, back in 9th grade. Wore it for every school band concert, orchestra concert, county youth orchestra, major youth symphony, All State, 3 proms (his brother wore it once), summer program, and is now still wearing it in his 3rd year of college. I'd say we got our money's worth!

But he also has tails, which he wears for most of his school concerts in college. And we just had to buy a white jacket for his summer program. Had to buy the cheap polyester one, because none of the others were pure white!

I think most of the things I would suggest were already mentioned, but my son's roommate had a few items that my son sent me back for. We bought a set of 4 large cup like things they sell at Bed Bath and Beyond that raise your bed a few inches. The room is small and the beds low to the ground so this helped give him some under bed storage space. He also found the mattress thin and very uncomfortable so I brought him a foam matress pad (his roomate had an air mattress on top of his bed.) I brought an Hepa air purifer. At home we change the filter twice a year, this was filthy after just a few weeks. It helped with the pollen and mold. In addition to a regular fan we brought a window fan. Also bring extension cords. Have a great time, my son loved the program!

My son said to add snacks to the list, as well a plenty of money for SoCo Creamery and Betty's Pizza. He is not a picky eater but insists that BUTI food is the absolute worst summer music food he's ever eaten. They even fired the chef in the middle of the session (rumor has it that he only knew how to make spaghetti), but the food still didn't improve much!

Well DS would agree..the food was awful. Binx...re: the dinner jacket. We also bought one this summer but we got the wool. DS was told by both Aspen and his professional musician friends that the poly ones are not needed, and that the lightweight wool both wears and hangs better. We too got a tux for DS early in the game. The first was a hand me down from his grandfather...and was perfect. The second was a name brand...looked new and fit perfectly from Goodwill for $25. He also has a set of Geoffrey Bean tails...also from Goodwill. That was a lucky find.
