NEED HELP!!!! NEW SCHOOL MESSED UP MY GPA FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

So I am in the military, which means that I move around a lot. I just recently moved in the middle of my junior to my new school which ruined MY WHOLE transcript.

I came to the school with a 4.05, I took honor classes and AP Chemistry for a semester then transferred to my new school. On my transcript (which took 6 months for the school to get) did not have my first semester of AP Chemistry. It had my second semester AP Chemistry because I had to finish out the credit. They also did not put in a couple of electives I took as well. On top of that, all my classes were transferred as ‘A’ with no percentage, so they just manually put in 95 for every single class I took since freshman year (even though I know I had higher than 95 in most of my classes I took). All the classes they enrolled me in were regular classes because I came in half way through the year. At the time, I didn’t think that was a big deal because they never mentioned how they ranked their GPA so I assumed that as long as you had all A’s you were able to get a 4.0. I was wrong.

I JUST got my GPA and it says I have a 3.79? Apparently, the grading system where I live now is very strange where it works in tiers, so if you took regular classes you would have to have a 98 or above in order to achieve a 4.0 and it’s the honors classes that give you the 4.0 if you just have an A. Then for the AP classes, you can get above a 4.0. (It’s very strange I know) This doesn’t make sense to me because I did take honor classes at my other school, so why am I not getting the recognition I worked really hard for? Looking at their grading system, it seems like they put me under regular classes for all the classes I took and did not count my AP Chemistry class in my GPA.

I personally am freaking out because I have to start looking into colleges and applying now and all the colleges I was looking into do not meet this GPA criterion. I also worry that if my school is a weighted GPA, it would just look like I got some B’s when I really didn’t. It’s just a disappointment that this is not my fault and I am in a military family and it is unfair to demote my hard work over the past 3 years. I guess my main questions are:

1.) Has anyone ever went through a transcript mishap and fixed it? How?
2.) Can I get my honor classes back if they are not in their system as honor classes?
3.) If this can’t get fixed, how will colleges see this?

Thank you

  1. Talk to the counselor/registrar at your new school. Explain your situation and what you're confused about. I think they'll be understanding! Stay professional, calm and to the point- whoever you meet with will probably be the person who will change your grades if they're able to or talk to higher administration on your behalf. Remember that you've done nothing wrong, and if one school official doesn't have an answer for you, don't be afraid to reach out to others.
  2. This is something to ask whoever you end up talking to at your school. I think that your first semester grades will probably be honors as they were from your old school, but your second semester grades will be graded on the "normal" scale for this new school.
  3. I think that you can get it at least partially fixed, but I think that colleges will clearly be able to see the discrepancy in grading that happened along with your move. They ask for transcripts from all high schools that you have attended.

I think a good question to ask would be why your previous elective credits did not get transferred… also, if your new school has taken a grade that you got in another completed quarter or semester at another school and modified it, that seems odd and definitely worth asking about. And don’t worry too much about a 3.79! If worst comes to worst and you’re stuck with it, it’s not a bad GPA.
