So I took the ACT my first time without studyin and i got a 27 on english, 27 on math, 29 on science but only a 23 on reading. I just struggle with reading.... i never seem to finish and i never can find a strategy to help me get questions right and finish. Anyone care to give ,e some pointers. r there any books also that are specifically good for the reading section on the ACT?

I’m not aware of a way to get better at reading without just reading more.

Most answers are stated in the passage, so either use the line numbers more, or get a general gist of each paragraph or so, that when you go back to find something, you don’t have to search the whole piece to find what you need.

“I’m not aware of a way to get better at reading without just reading more.”

Sadly, for a score like yours, this is probably true. I’ve read all the ACT books, and I didn’t get much better than reading except by a few points.

However, when I started reading 24/7 this summer, I now get 30 or so.

Good luck :)

The best technique I learned was read the questions first. If you want to skim the passage, but then go straight to the questions. Answer the ones with number references first because those are the easier to find, then do ones with key words that you can find by scanning. Then once you have answered those questions, you should have the gist of the passage and be able to answer the other questions.

This worked the best for me and I got a 34. But, each person works differently and if it helps you to read the passage then by all means do it! Though remember the line reference questions are the easier because it is a search and find as well as the key word questions. These are easy points if you have trouble with this section.

GOOD LUCK!

^Definitely depends on the person. I personally don’t find that technique to be effective for me. :o Doesn’t hurt to try it out though.

Just read more, really. There aren’t any tricks on the ACT-- this isn’t the SAT where you need to spend months trying to learn every test trick in the book.
