Need help regarding FAFSA question 74

FAFSA question 74 ask: How many people in your parents’ household (from question 73) will be college students between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020? Will a sibling who is going to graduate school in 2019 - 2020 counted? Thank you in advance for your help to resolve this.

If the student will be starting college after a May 2019 hs graduation, yes, include that student. If not, don’t include. If it is possible, then put the sibling in, but if that person don’t go, they you have to notify the schools and they’ll adjust your FA.

I am sorry that I did not make myself clear. The sibling is actually graduating with a BS degree in May 2019 and plan on going to a Master Degree program after that. The student that is filing the FAFSA is going to be a freshman in college in 2019. Since there is a difference in EFC with one vs two in college, whether his sibling can be included is pretty significant for his financial aid.

Some colleges will “count” grad school students who are still dependents and members of the household…and others just wont.

At some point, you will need to provide proof of enrollment to the college for your undergrad kid.

So…you may want to contact the colleges to see what their policies are…especially if you are needing significantly more aid.

If the colleges don’t meet full need for all…this might not matter at all.

Your grad school kid will be filing their own FAFSA as an independent student…and they cannot list the sibling as another person in college on their form.

The question is how to answer FAFSA question 74 correctly for the Freshman kid. Shall I just answer “1” or “2” as college student(s) in 2019 knowing full well that one of them is actually in a Master Degree program. If I put “2” down, is it legal? Is it ethical? Since “1” vs “2” will have major impact in EFC calculation for the Freshman kid.

There’s some commentary here that might be helpful to you: http://www.finaid.org/educators/pj/householdsize.phtml

Thank you very much.

We are counting my D who is in grad school (pharmacy) as a fulltime student and is going to be supported by us in the year 2019/20 as a member of the household and student in college for my son’s FAFSA.

@mommdc

We included our grad school kid on the fafsa. But we knew the undergrad school kid two was attending allowed that. Others she applied to clearly said NO to that.

So…do check the policy at your second kid’s undergrad school.

I got a clearer picture now. Thank you all for your help.
