In my view, it seems that Haverford, Carleton and Grinnell epitomize what you are looking for in a college.

@sara12 that sounds so awesome. I love community service and nice people are a big bonus!

@5boys- wow we seem to be pretty similar people, except that I am a bit judgemental and not so outdoorsy (yet). Is he EDing Reed ?

@pointoforder: Do you have any personal preference/specific reasons to suggest any of them ? I visited Haverford so I know.

Guys, what about Pomona and Claremont ? no one seems to have mentioned it, is it not ‘my type’ of college ?

“Do you have any personal experience with any of those colleges ?”

D visited and applied to a bunch of LACs (Davidson, Oberlin, Amherst, Haverford, Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Wesleyen, Smith). Her favorites were Williams, Wesleyen, and Haverford. She will be attending Williams but I’m sure she would have been happy at any of the schools. PM me if you want some more specifics of the schools visited.

I think Pomona would be a good fit also (though I can’t guarantee there won’t be drinking and partying; my understanding is that there is a fair amount.)

The University of Chicago meets almost all your criteria very well. It is not a LAC, but does offer small discussion-based classes. ARWLU ranks Chicago #2 in the world for social sciences. It is also very strong in physics.

The schools suggested above are excellent. However, if Swarthmore is your benchmark, you might prefer Chicago to many LACs, unless you absolutely want a school with only a few thousand students. Chicago is not a huge university; the classroom experience would be very LAC-like. However, the campus and student body are large enough that it does have a more imposing, less intimate atmosphere than a New England style LAC.

Goodwood - feel free to PM me! I welcome any and all opportunities to help people learn about my school.

johnwesley: Do you think Pomona is very sportsy ? What about Claremont McKenna ?
tk21769: I’m alreaday Applying UChicago EA Do you know of any other univs that are UChicago like (non LACs)

guys, how can I quote on these forums ?

^^ Why not keep it public so everyone can share?

Carleton is a really fine school that is somewhat underappreciated. I agree it belongs on the OP’s short list for the stated criteria.

Rice is a LAC-like university you might want to check out. Smaller than Chicago, and with professional programs in engineering, architecture and music.

5Boys mentioned Colorado College. It may be a good match choice (much less selective than Swarthmore and somewhat less so than Reed; friendly, not too preppy.) Like Reed, it has also had a reputation for a rather smoky atmosphere, though it’s certainly not a big party school.

Earlham and Guilford are two Quaker colleges that are much less selective than Swat. These might be good safeties especially if money is not a big issue.

To quote a post, wrap the text in: [ quote] … [ /quote]
But delete the blanks, which I added just to illustrate the tag.

Actually, tk, I had asked reesez if I could PM.

Looks like I can’t edit my Original Post, I just felt that I needed to add another criteria/something i’m looking for
Political activist and intelectualism, where discussions spills out of the classrooms and people talk about stuff like politics etc (intellectual stuff) on the weekends etc.

How to quote on CC: with the word “quote” inside the first pair of brackets and “/quote” inside the second pair (what’s being quoted goes in-between the two pairs).

Yes, there’s a sports scene at Pomona, but, it’s about one tenth as intense as between New England small colleges; it’s not unusual for Claremont colleges to combine rosters in order to form one team.

If you want political discussion and activism, definately check out Wesleyen. New College in FL would be a match. No sports, political activism, and a quirky and intellectual student body.
