Need Help with College Decison

Hi everyone,

I am in a tough situation and don't know if I am making the right decision for next year. I just graduated high school and was not accepted to neither my #1 nor #2 schools (Cal Poly SLO and San Diego State, respectively). I was however accepted to Point Loma Nazarene University; a small private school (with quite a price tag as well). I committed to this school because I didn't want to go to a community college, namely Saddleback College, and transfer after 2 years or so. I'm also not sure if Point Loma is considered a "good school" or not. Ultimately, I would really like to end up at Cal Poly or SDSU and graduate. My question/predicament is that I don't know if I have made right decision by choosing to go to Point Loma if I ultimately want to transfer. Would it be better for me to choose to go to a community college and transfer from there? Or would I have the same chances of transferring from Point Loma? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

well, you don’t tell us how much price is a factor except to say that the school where you’re enrolled is pricey.

I have a family member who went to saddleback for 2 years and then transferred to a large uni in LA and excelled there. so it’s possible to do that from saddleback. she was a strong student to begin with and decided to save some money by going the cc route.

most of the sentiment around here seems to be that you shouldn’t go to a 4yr planning to transfer. you would probably lose any FA you have from Point Loma because transferees usually aren’t big targets for FA. that is, transferring from a 4yr can be costly. If you go to the cc, you mitigate some of that costliness via the lower costs of the cc credits.

try not to make your decision out of ego or a feeling that you have to be doing what your friends are doing or what you think your family wants you to do. Do what’s better for yourself. Two years at a cc might be just the ticket, time for you to become a better student, grow up a little bit, and get used to the college pace. On the other hand, you might go to Point Loma and love it to death despite the fact it wasn’t your first or second choice. And never want to transfer.

Third option: take a gap year. Tell Point Loma you’ll see them in a year. Then get out and work and travel a little bit and safe some money and see how difficult working 8 hours a day at a dead end job is. Then in the fall you can apply to any number of other colleges in the area and give yourself some more options.

It is natural to get cold feet in late July before freshman year. Try to make a good rational decision on what’s best for you.

This is what comes of having a safety you really don’t want to go to. :open_mouth:

Point Loma’s a great place. Grads from my high school who go there love it. If you can afford the price, dive in feet first! If not, do consider the CC route or taking a gap year.
