I have taken two years of French at the high school level. However, due to budget and scheduling problems, I cannot take another year at the high school level.

I plan to take a course of French at my local community college.

I have two questions-

1) Is the semester of college language separate from my high school credits, or will it count for a third year of high school language? (I am planning on applying to UCLA or USC)

2) Do I have to take French 3 at the college level, or do I have to start out at French 1, and if I take French 1, does that count for a third year of language?

Thanks in advance.

You’ll probably have to take a placement test to determine what level of a foreign language course to take in college. That’s typically how colleges determine foreign language placement.

I’m not worried about taking classes at the university level, I’m worried about actually being accepted.

You need to ask the colleges if your lack of more language courses will affect your admissions chances.

In general, from what I’ve seen, colleges don’t reject students for not taking such required courses if the reason was beyond the student’s control, but you need to check with the colleges to find out their policy.

Thank you very much.
