Need helping deciding between GTech/VTech/UIUC

Hi, I am from Virginia and am elated to be offered admission to Georgia Tech and my major will be Computer Science. However, I cannot decide which school would serve my interests the best. My parents can pay for my tuition, but I would feel bad about them paying 48k for GTech and UIUC when they only pay 17k for Vtech since I'm instate. I cannot get any financial aid since my family's income bracket won't qualify. The thing is that, I am sure that I will have more internship opportunities at GTech and UIUC (especially since I got into UIUC's honors program) than Vtech, so that might pay off. Also, I've heard that GTech is the most rigorous out of the three and that GTech has a more prestigious edge over UIUC and even more over VTech in the engineering world. I'm probably going to do Grad school, so maybe GTech will open more doors for me, assuming I can keep up with the curriculum. I know that the gender is skewed, but I don't really care since GTech is in the middle Atlanta. I've been researching alot about these three schools and it seems that GTech alumni's are the most successful out of the three. So, what do you guys think? Which school would be better for me in the long run? I don't really mind other factors such as urban/rural or food.

UIUC is no different than VT. Decide between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. I don’t see any reason to pay 48k when you can get education in your home state for 20k especially if you want to goto grad school. Both can land you a great job and opportunities. My vote is for Virginia Tech. You will be paying 28k more every year which means 112k for 4 years. Waste of 112k cannot be justified by saying “but Georgia Tech has more prestige”.

I have a son graduating in May from VT and one about to start GT for computer science in June (we are from Ga.). My VT son admitted that the VT computer science dept. wasn’t the best, yet he has a good friend in that major there who had great internships (Microsoft was one) and I think already has a job. If you’re planning to go to grad school, save the undergrad $ and go to VT. My VT son has had a great time in school while getting a good education. He has loved Blacksburg and already has a good job waiting for him.

I looked up OOS cost for GT it’s 41,558 per year right now not 48K. But that still is a huge difference in price. The only way to bring down GT price is to go the co-op route. It would take you longer but you would make some money that could offset some of the cost. But certainly not all of it… have you visited all three schools? if not you should try to visit them. That may help you decide where to go. Are you and your Parents going to have to take out any loans to pay for the OOS cost? you don’t want a huge debt when you get out.

Heyy. I seem to be in a similar situation except no VT in the picture for me. Plus I’m OOS for GaTech and UIUC. Seems they’re more or less similar for Computer Science but for some reason GT is better known even though UIUC is ranked higher (I can’t figure out why).
GT does seem to be the most rigorous of all three.

I’m a high school junior who just came back from visiting several colleges over my spring break, including Georgia Tech. I fell in love with everything at GT, but am concerned about the price because I too am an out of state student. In spite of what the admissions counselors mentioned during my visit, my research leads me to believe that I can forget about getting any financial support from GT. I have a 4.2 GPA (weighted); will have taken 9 AP course before graduating; and got a 2000 on my SAT. Am I correct or do I have a chance of getting any help?

@vaJunior Unfortunately from my son’s admission experience, I don’t think you can expect aid. He had similar, maybe a little better, stats and was initially deferred from admission before being admitted for the summer session. (He’d applied for fall but must go to the 5-week late summer session.) Good luck to you, though! (And take another shot at improving your SAT.)

GT is the best school on the list in a lot of ways, but unless your parents are made of money I’d go to VT.
