Need opinions FAST, please!!! UNC-CH vs. Univ of Missouri, Columbia

Hi All,

We need help fast! We need to decide this week. My d has been accepted to many top J schools. Her career focus in Broadcast Journalism. We have narrowed it down to Univ of Missouri and UNC for very different reasons.

Univ of Missouri B **- She is a Walter Williams Scholar, will be staying in a dorm for those scholars, is in Honors. BUT **Financial Aid fell very short **and it is difficult to pay for everything. It might be more difficult next year. Mizzou is tops in Journalism, prestigious, has a lot of clout in the job market. Airlines tix are more expensive from where we are as well.

UNC - Everything paid for with UNC grants and a laptop grant as well!. We and my d will save a lot of money not to mention the stress associated with money problems. Good Journalism school, considered one of the top 5 public ivys. Good in Journalism and career services. Close to Research Triangle Park for jobs and internships. I have heard dorm situation is below par and there are only 2 Dining areas on campus. (The food is bad - I was there so I can speak to that)

I would love to hear from current students and/or alumni as well as parents for the FINANCIAL point of view or any point of view.

Thanks in advance...

i dont see how this is even a question lol considering unc paid for everything..you're getting an ivy league education (something that mizzou cannot compare with) for free basically. the location of chapel hill is better in my opinion considering its 20 min from raleigh (one of the fastest growing areas, tons of job opportunities). unc > mizzou in terms of prestige. it seems like most people would only consider mizzou for journalism..but dont forget that unc's j-school is also top 5 nationally so you wouldnt be losing anything by choosing unc for journalism. and im surprised that the food is bad, i heard unc has great food? also, unc is top ranked in various areas such as business (#5 undergrad), pharmacy (#3), public health (tied w/harvard, #2), primary care (#2), library and informational sciences (#1).

miss - thanks for you opinion.

My d's focus is Journalism and Mizzou does outrank UNC in that. As I said in my previous msg, I realize UNC is a top ranked school, and their J school is good; otherwise she wouldn't have applied.

I def. agree about the location. Having been invited to 2 days of events for admitted students 2 weeks ago, I am sorry but the food in Ram's Head dining facility was "pretty awful". Many other parents and students had the same reaction, but that is a very "minor" consideration in the general scheme of things.

Thanks again.

miss-

BTW, what is your affiliation, if any, with UNC?

Chances of the Mizzou degree helping with Journalism? Probably no more than 10% ... Journalism is about the articles anyway and UNC is ranked #3 while Mizzou is #2.

Chances of you having to pay back the $? 100%
Chances of her changing major?

I would go with UNC. Unless the $ different is minor. With part of the $ saved, your daughter could buy a micro-wave and fridge and cook part of her meals. Then there are cheap, healthy, and good eating options such as Subway... besides, most students move out by Junior year.

pairodocks- misstina will be attending UNC in the fall.

Must say I have to agree with margsala... Mizzou might have the journalism name prestige but journalism is a field where it's all about having clips and experience in the industry (internships).

UNC is definitely a better bet. What if she decides to not go into journalism? UNC is strong in just about everything.

*annn - *
Have you or did you attend UNC? How do you know 'misstina' ?

*heather - *

She is extremely focused on Broadcast Journalism - not much chance of changing that.

Thanks to everyone for your posts.

I will most likely be an incoming student next year. We know each other via facebook. I was also in the same place as your daughter, and decided to choose UNC. I'm glad I did since I now want to go towards law... oh how things change in a couple of months :)

yes i agree with margsala, theres not much of a difference between unc and mizzou's jschools if theres only a one or 2 rank difference. people have just as much respect for unc's jschool as mizzou's. its about the internships like people have said and the location of unc seems to work more in students' favor. and plus STUART SCOTT GRADUATED FROM UNC..and yeah..he pwns all reporters.

haha yeah i know annn through facebook. we might be suitemates (assuming housing options work out in our favor) facebook is amazing =]

As as rankings go, the top five are always moving around a bit and who is ranked higher depends on the year you look. One constant though is that both UNC and Mizzou are ALWAYS in the top five.

If you were comparing UNC and Syracuse for broadcast journalism I might give the nod to Syracuse but only slightly and only because it has had so many grads move into top network positions especially in sports.

If you posted this same question on the Parents forum you might get more results and perhaps more unbiased opinions. There actually are a number of working journalists on the Parents forum. One thing that I do recall from a similar post several years ago is that these days to get anywhere in journalism the keys are not only internships but also grad school. With that latter thought in mind, having her attend UNC and graduating debt free will position her and yourselves far better for the added expense that comes with a top grad school like Northwestern or Columbia.

I LOVE the food at Ramshead. Please tell me I'm not the only one! ; ) Everyone I know is so excited about eating there in the Fall, lol. pairodocks, what did you think was bad about the food? I love the variety: )

cat - My d tells me the Ramshead food is really good too...so you are not the only one.

During parent orientation, we only had opportunity to eat at Top of the Lenoir...also very good. You guys have it made...when I was in college, we had a choice of gross disgusting filler-meat hamburgers, fried fish, french fries and hush puppies and a big bin full of chopped up iceberg lettuce that food services liked to call 'salad'. Things have SO improved since those days! ;)

pairodocks: After reading all your other posts on this and the Parents Forum, I think you should try to ensure your daughter gets to her "first choice" school, which is Mizzou. I suspect both she (and you) would be happier there, it sounds to me. I'm sure she can pick up work in the summers to help pay the tuition. Good luck!
