Need opinions FAST, please! UNC-CH vs. Univ of Missouri, Columbia

Hi All,

We need help fast! We need to decide this week. My d has been accepted to many top J schools. Her career focus in Broadcast Journalism. We have narrowed it down to Univ of Missouri and UNC for very different reasons.

Univ of Missouri B **- She is a Walter Williams Scholar, will be staying in a dorm for those scholars, is in Honors. BUT **Financial Aid fell very short **and it is difficult to pay for everything. It might be more difficult next year. Mizzou is tops in Journalism, prestigious, has a lot of clout in the job market. Airlines tix are more expensive from where we are as well.

UNC - Everything paid for with UNC grants and a laptop grant as well!. We and my d will save a lot of money not to mention the stress associated with money problems. Good Journalism school, considered one of the top 5 public ivys. Good in Journalism and career services. Close to Research Triangle Park for jobs and internships. I have heard dorm situation is below par and there are only 2 Dining areas on campus. (The food is bad - I was there so I can speak to that)

I would love to hear from current students and/or alumni as well as parents for the FINANCIAL point of view or any point of view.

Thanks in advance...

I'm not going to either school, but I live in NC and my school sends 50+ students to UNC a year, so I know quite a bit about it. Academically, it's much more well-respected than Missouri. I've also heard great things about the journalism program..people that really liked the classes, lots of great internships, etc. I can't comment on the food because I've never eaten on campus, but I've never heard any complaints about it, so while it may not be great, it's probably not HORRIBLE. If it's an option for you financially, there are a lot of good, cheap restaurants on Franklin Street to break up the monotony of cafeteria food. Housing is hit and miss. There are some great dorms and some horrible dorms. Hmm..other things. Chapel Hill is quite possibly the best college town I've ever been in. If your daughter is interested in sports/school spirit, UNC would be amazing just because of the basketball. And it has a very, very good alumni network. There are only a few bad things I can thing of. 80% of students are in-state, so there won't be a lot of diversity, although I've heard it's easy to find your niche. Also, because so many students are from in-state, a lot stay in NC after graduating so there won't be a lot of alumni in other areas of the country.

Do you know anything about the dorms?
