Applying To: UChicago, WashU, Brown, NYU, St. Olaf, Depaul, Macalaster, Georgetown, American

Looking For: Schools with sense of community, campus feel, cerebral environment, strong academics, great study abroad, located in large city

Not Looking For: Greek Life, emphasis on sports

Most of my schools seem to be targets or reaches; I've only got one safety school (DePaul) and I'm not sure where else fits those requirements. HELP PLEASE

*I’m from the South, but I don’t plan to apply anywhere below the Mason-Dixon

What can your family pay each year?

I’ve only got one safety school (DePaul)

If you’re not sure how all your costs at DePaul will be covered, then it’s not a safety.

Have your parents said that they’ll pay all costs at any school you go to?

Wagner College (NYC) Boston University Hofstra Fordham (NYC) UNC chapel hill UCONN Umass

Do you have cost constraints?

You in-state public schools likely provide the best safety candidates.

What majors are you interested in?

Holy Cross

???

UNC is not a safety.

I hope this student doesn’t have any cost constraints because she may not have any safeties if she won’t apply to any instate publics.

How about Barnard in NYC? George Washington in D.C.?

Lewis & Clark (Portland) or Goucher (near Baltimore).

I don’t think you have a big problem with admissions. I think you can certainly get into American. (I also think you can get into Macalester, but I know a lot less about Macalester than I do about AU.) If you’re looking to add to your list, I second the idea of Goucher.

As others have said, though, whether they’re safe for admissions is completely immaterial if you can’t afford them.

IMO, a safety is a safety only if:

you can almost surely get in;
you think you could be happy and successful there;
your family can afford it.

If it lacks any of those components, it’s not a safety.

*Financial aid has been taken care of. Although I would appreciate schools with good merit aid.
