Although I have been searching online for a while, it still seems to confusing for me to choose a good college. The searching tool of his website is helpful, but the levels of important are only 3 degrees and other selecting criteria it is not detailed enough for me..(kinda import and very import) ...I really need some one in America for some help.

I'd like to request a college that:
1. The standard of enrolling:SAT at least 1900+ required, toefl 100+ required, gpa 3.3~3.8
2. DON'T IN A HOT STATE, I MEAN , THE CLIMATE!
3. I indeed like a liberal atmosphere.
4. Greek life and sport are not really matter
5. I want the class arrangement is flexible and my schedule will not too tight.
6. Kind teacher, and at most the ratio to student is 1:15
7. I like business, politics, psychology, sociology and other humanity subject.
8. I like both University and LAC, but not community college or military college.
9. It's been scary for me about the safety since our country's propaganda always talk about the shooting and murder in American, so I want to be alive while I am in America...(any way , it is the least important if I study in NYC)

It seems a LAC with good humanities programs would suit you.
I suggest Amherst, Vassar, Colgate. Search for colleges along the lines of those. I find the College Board College Search particularly helpful.
Most colleges demand a SAT score above 1800-1900 and a TOEFL score of 100 and above. But a college’s standardized score range/requirement isn’t necessarily an indicator of its education’s quality.

Why don’t you just give us YOUR scores, and we can make some suggestions? You wouldn’t be getting into ANY of the schools eltanin mentions with a 3.5 GPA and 1900 SAT.

Thank you very much! Why college board will different from this website? What’s wrong with college confiderntial or college board searching? Could you tell me how can a know what is a good indicator of its education’s quality?

reply #7: My toefl is 100 and I am going to take it again next week. My SAT is 1800 in June and I am confident I will reach 2000 (with the wish of getting a higher score) in October.

The search engines might show slightly different results because they use different factors in creating their results. Some of them also allow schools to advertise and you will see those at the top of the list even if they are not relevant. I can’t remember now which one I tried that did that. It wasn’t college board or college navigator though ;-)

According to me, some good indicators of a college’s education quality are:
The profile of the faculty of the department you’re interested in.
UROPs and internships available at the university for students of the department you’re interested in.
The profile of notable alumni from the college who have worked in the fields you’re interested in.
Availability of allied majors and their relative popularity.

Also, consolation is right. It’s usually a good idea to post your SAT scores, GPA or anything that can help other CC members help you. And 1800, or even 2000 isn’t enough sometimes for int’ls seeking aid. But I don’t mean to be discouraging, because there are other factors apart from SAT scores that are involved. I recommend using Barron’s workbooks for CR and W sections to improve your score. Good luck!
(PS:And college search engines are simply a matter of preference.)

Not necessarily. Have you read through everything at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov) and paid a visit to the advising center closest to where you live? The counselors there are the real experts at helping students from your country find good places to study in the US. They will be able to tell you which colleges and universities here have accepted students like you in recent years. EducationUSA is a not-for-profit organization that prides itself on providing accurate, unbiased information about higher education opportunities in the US. If the counselors in your country are like the ones I used to work with in South America, you will be in good hands.

If there aren’t any advising centers that are easy for you to get to, contact the counselors by email. They should be able to give you some help long-distance.

Then, can I ask very specific question rather than all those general FAQ on the home pages? Do those counselors know every thing about every school? How can I find those prodigious counselors?

Which home pages and which FAQ? The universities’? If you want answers to that, your best answers are to be had by emailing the universities themselves.

The college navigator one. Thanks, I know. But for me, I want to ask specific question of the college characteristic but not the college name?

If I understand correctly, you would like to be able to search for colleges and universities with specific characteristics. This means that you need to make a very clear list of what is important to you.

Most colleges and universities in the US do not specifically state that a certain SAT score or GPA is required for admission. If you put your SAT score and GPA into the search engines, you can find some colleges and universities where you have a good chance at admission. You will have to check the website of each of those to find out whether your TOEFL score is good enough.

You can’t search for teacher/student ratio with College Navigator. However, when you have run the search, click on the tab to “Export Results” and that information will appear in the spreadsheet.

It is not unusual for international students to have to look at the websites of two or three hundred colleges and universities to find the information that they need. That’s why I recommend getting in touch with EducationUSA if you can. They will be able to help you with this in your own language. The main website is available in several languages too: [EducationUSA | 5 Steps To Study](http://www.educationusa.info/5_steps_to_study/)
